Gulangyu Island
Gulangyu Island in Xiamen
Located just offshore from Xiamen City, Fujian Province, Gulangyu Island is one of the most famous tourist attractions in southeastern China. Known for its beautiful beaches, historic architecture, peaceful streets, and rich musical heritage, Gulangyu offers visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural charm.
With its warm climate, fresh sea air, relaxed lifestyle, and beautiful coastal scenery, Xiamen is widely regarded as one of China’s most pleasant cities to visit. Among all of Xiamen’s attractions, Gulangyu Island Xiamen is undoubtedly the city’s most iconic destination.
In 2017, Gulangyu Island was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historic international settlement and unique architectural heritage.

A Peaceful Island Without Cars
Covering an area of less than 2 square kilometers, Gulangyu Island is located only a short ferry ride from downtown Xiamen.
One of the island’s most distinctive features is its peaceful environment. Unlike most modern urban areas, cars are not allowed on Gulangyu, creating a quiet atmosphere where visitors can walk along narrow streets, explore old buildings, and enjoy the sound of waves.
The island is famous for:
* Beautiful beaches
* Fresh seafood
* Historic European-style buildings
* Shaded pathways
* Relaxed island lifestyle
Walking is the best way to discover Gulangyu, as every corner reveals a different view of its unique charm.

Gulangyu Island: The “Piano Island” of China
Gulangyu is often called the “Piano Island” because of its deep connection with music.
The island has a long musical tradition, with thousands of residents playing or appreciating music. Although the population is around 20,000–25,000 people, Gulangyu has a remarkable number of pianos and musicians.
The island is home to the Piano Museum, which displays valuable historic pianos from around the world. The museum houses dozens of rare instruments and introduces visitors to the development of piano culture.
Because of its strong musical atmosphere, Gulangyu is also known as:
* The “Island of Music”
* The “Cradle of Musicians”
The combination of music, art, and peaceful surroundings gives the island a unique cultural identity.

Gulang Island in XiamenGulangyu: An Open-Air Museum of Architecture
Another major attraction of Gulangyu Island is its impressive collection of historical buildings.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Gulangyu became an international settlement where many foreign countries established consulates, churches, schools, hospitals, and residences.
The island once hosted representatives from countries including:
* Britain
* France
* Japan
* The United States
* Germany
* Other foreign powers
These historical influences created a unique architectural landscape featuring:
* European-style villas
* Colonial buildings
* Traditional Chinese elements
* Western gardens
Because of its diverse architectural heritage, Gulangyu is often called the “Architecture Museum” of China.

History of Gulangyu Island
The history of Gulangyu dates back centuries.
During the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), the island was known as Yuanshazhou Island. It later received its current name because of a large reef surrounding the island.
According to local tradition:
* Gu (鼓) means “drum”
* Lang (浪) means “waves”
When waves hit the reef, the sound resembles the beating of a drum, giving the island the name Gulangyu, meaning “drum waves.”
During the late Ming Dynasty, the famous Chinese national hero Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga) stationed troops on the island.
After the Opium War in 1842, Gulangyu became an international settlement. Several foreign countries established diplomatic and commercial facilities here, leaving behind many historical buildings.
During the Second World War, Japan occupied the island from 1942 until the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan.

A Relaxing Island Lifestyle
Today, Gulangyu is a peaceful destination where visitors can escape the busy pace of city life.
Since traditional vehicles are restricted and only permitted electric vehicles operate on the island, Gulangyu maintains a clean and quiet environment.
Visitors can enjoy:
* Fresh sea breezes
* Tropical plants and flowers
* Historic streets
* Ocean views
* Local seafood
The island’s combination of nature, culture, and architecture creates a relaxing atmosphere often described as a paradise by the sea.

Top Attractions on Gulangyu Island

Sunlight Rock is the highest point on Gulangyu Island and one of the best places to enjoy panoramic views of:

Built in 1931, Shuzhuang Garden was originally a private villa before becoming a public garden in 1955.
Located beside the sea, the garden combines traditional Chinese landscaping techniques with coastal scenery. Visitors can explore elegant pavilions, gardens, and viewpoints overlooking the ocean.
