Wuyi Mountian
Wuyi mountain in Fujian Province
Located in northern Fujian Province, southeastern China, Wuyi Mountain (Mount Wuyi) is one of the most famous natural and cultural attractions in the country. Known for its spectacular red sandstone peaks, clear rivers, rich biodiversity, and ancient cultural heritage, Wuyi Mountain is often praised as the “Most Beautiful Mountain in Southeast China.”
Covering an area of approximately 999.75 square kilometers, Wuyi Mountain is a national AAAAA-level scenic area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of China’s most important nature reserves.
With its unique combination of dramatic landscapes, traditional tea culture, and historical significance, Wuyi Mountain China is an ideal destination for travelers seeking nature, culture, and outdoor adventure.

The Natural Beauty of Wuyi Mountain
Located about 15 kilometers south of Wuyishan City (formerly Chong’an County), the Wuyi Mountain scenic area is surrounded by streams, valleys, and forests, creating a peaceful environment isolated from urban life.
The mountain is famous for its:
* Red sandstone peaks
* Clear mountain streams
* Deep valleys
* Ancient forests
* Unique wildlife
* Traditional tea plantations
The landscape of Wuyi Mountain is especially known for the contrast between its red cliffs and green vegetation, creating the iconic scenery often described as “green waters and red mountains.”

The Legend Behind the Name Wuyi Mountain
According to ancient Chinese legend, the name Wuyi Mountain comes from two brothers, Wu and Yi, the sons of an 800-year-old man named Peng Zu.
In prehistoric times, the people of the region suffered from severe flooding. Wu and Yi worked together to clear waterways and control the floods, bringing peace and prosperity to the local people.
To honor their achievements, the mountain was named Wuyi Mountain, and a palace was built in their memory.
The river created during their legendary flood-control work is believed to be the famous Nine-Bend River (Jiuquxi), which remains one of the most popular attractions in the area today.

The Nine-Bend River (Jiuquxi) is the heart of Wuyi Mountain’s scenic beauty.
The river winds through the mountains for several kilometers, passing dramatic cliffs, forests, and ancient cultural sites. One of the most popular activities for visitors is a traditional bamboo raft ride along the Nine-Bend River.
During the journey, travelers can enjoy:
* Views of towering red cliffs
* Quiet mountain scenery
* Unique rock formations
* Ancient inscriptions on cliff walls
The peaceful rafting experience allows visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of Wuyi Mountain from a unique perspective.

Wuyi Mountain and Chinese Culture
Wuyi Mountain has been an important cultural center for centuries. During the Tang and Song dynasties, many Buddhist and Taoist temples, pavilions, and cultural sites were built in the area.
The famous Neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi (1130–1200) of the Southern Song Dynasty was deeply inspired by the scenery of the Nine-Bend River. He wrote poems praising the landscape and established the Ziyang Academy of Classic Learning beside the river.
Today, Wuyi Mountain remains an important destination for understanding traditional Chinese philosophy, literature, and education.

Famous Peaks and Scenic Spots of Wuyi Mountain

Great King Peak (Dawangfeng)
Located west of Wuyi Palace, Great King Peak is the highest and most impressive peak in the Wuyi Mountain scenic area.
Its majestic shape resembles a great ruler standing proudly among the mountains, which is why it is known as the “Great King Peak.”
Visitors can enjoy excellent panoramic views from this area.

Jade Maiden Peak (Yunü Peak)
Across from Great King Peak stands Jade Maiden Peak, one of the most beautiful landmarks of Wuyi Mountain.
With smooth cliffs, elegant shapes, and green vegetation, the peak is said to resemble a graceful young woman.
A famous local legend tells the romantic story of the Jade Maiden and the Great King, two lovers who were transformed into mountains after refusing to leave each other.
Between the two peaks stands Iron Slab Peak (Tiebanfeng), which legend says represents the demon who revealed their love story.
