D1 Urumqi City Tour
Arrive in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, by flight from major cities in China such as Beijing, Shanghai or Chengdu.
Upon arrival, your local tour guide will meet you and begin a city tour. Visit the lively Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, one of the best places in Urumqi to experience the diverse cultures and flavors of Xinjiang.
Walk through the bazaar’s bustling streets and explore shops selling local handicrafts, dried fruits, spices, textiles and other regional specialties. You can also sample local Xinjiang cuisine and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of this multicultural city.

D2 Urumqi – Turpan | Approx. 198 km, 2 hours’ drive
In the morning, drive approximately 2 hours from Urumqi to Turpan, one of the most fascinating oasis cities along the ancient Silk Road.
Begin with a visit to Tuyugou Valley, a scenic valley known for its dramatic desert landscape, vineyards and traditional Uyghur villages. Walk through the historic village and see traditional mud-brick houses while experiencing the distinctive local culture of the Turpan region.
Continue to Jiaohe Ancient City, an extraordinary archaeological site built on a natural plateau. The ruins preserve streets, houses, temples and other structures constructed mainly from rammed earth, providing a remarkable insight into life along the ancient Silk Road more than 2,000 years ago.
In the afternoon, explore the Karez Irrigation System, one of the traditional engineering achievements that enabled people to live and cultivate crops in the extremely dry Turpan Basin. The underground channels transported water from the foothills to settlements and farmland while reducing water loss from evaporation.
Continue exploring Turpan’s local culture and enjoy the distinctive Uyghur atmosphere of this famous oasis city.

D3 Turpan – Shanshan | Approx. 90 km, 1 hour’s drive
In the morning, visit the spectacular Flaming Mountains, a chain of red sandstone mountains famous for their intense colors and dry, hot environment. The mountains are also closely associated with the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, in which the Monkey King encounters the legendary Flaming Mountain.
Continue to Kumtag Desert near Shanshan, one of the most accessible desert landscapes in the Turpan region. Climb the dunes or simply enjoy the vast panorama of golden sand and surrounding mountains.
The late afternoon is an especially beautiful time to experience the desert, when the changing light creates dramatic patterns across the dunes. Depending on the season and local conditions, you can also try activities such as camel riding and desert off-road vehicles.
In the evening, check in to your hotel in Shanshan. You can take a leisurely walk around the city and experience the relaxed atmosphere of this small oasis town.

D4 Shanshan – Urumqi / Onward Journey
After breakfast, drive back toward Urumqi. Depending on your travel arrangements, you can continue to Urumqi Airport or Railway Station for your onward flight or train.
Alternatively, Shanshan Railway Station provides a convenient option for continuing your journey by train to destinations such as Dunhuang, subject to the available train schedule.
