D1 Urumqi City Tour

 

Arrive in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, and begin your city tour according to your arrival time.

 

Visit Red Hill Park, one of Urumqi’s best-known landmarks, where you can enjoy views over the city and learn more about its local history. Then stroll through the lively International Bazaar, a great place to experience the multicultural atmosphere of Xinjiang. Browse colorful handicrafts, ethnic textiles, local snacks, dried fruits, spices, and other regional specialties.

 

After the sightseeing, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

 

D2 Urumqi – Turpan

 

Distance: about 198 km | Driving time: about 2 hours

After breakfast, drive from Urumqi to Turpan, an important oasis city along the ancient Silk Road.

 

Upon arrival, visit the remarkable Jiaohe Ancient City, an ancient settlement built on a naturally formed earthen plateau. Dating back more than 2,000 years, the ruins are among the best-preserved ancient earthen cities in the world. Walk through the remains of streets, temples, government buildings, and residential areas while learning about the history of the Silk Road and the civilizations that once flourished here.

 

In the afternoon, continue your Turpan sightseeing with a visit to the Karez Well System, an ingenious ancient irrigation system. Explore the underground channels and wells that brought water from the surrounding mountains to the oasis, making agriculture and settlement possible in this extremely dry region. You will also have the opportunity to experience the distinctive culture and traditions of the local Uyghur people.

 

Stay overnight in Turpan.

 

D3 Turpan – Shanshan

 

Distance: about 90 km | Driving time: about 1 hour

Meals: Breakfast

 

In the morning, visit the spectacular Flaming Mountains, famous for their barren red-orange ridges and their connection with the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, in which the Monkey King encounters the legendary Flaming Mountain.

 

Continue to Shanshan in the afternoon and explore the Kumtag Desert, one of the most accessible desert landscapes in Xinjiang and a popular destination near Turpan. Climb the rolling sand dunes and enjoy the expansive desert scenery. The landscape becomes especially atmospheric around sunset, when the changing light creates beautiful colors and shadows across the dunes.

 

For an additional desert experience, you can try activities such as camel riding and desert jeep rides, subject to local availability.

 

Stay overnight in Shanshan. In the evening, take a leisurely walk around the city and experience the relaxed atmosphere of this small oasis town.

 

D4 Shanshan – Urumqi

 

Distance: about 297 km | Driving time: about 3 hours

Meals: Breakfast

 

After breakfast, drive back to Urumqi. Depending on your onward travel arrangements, you can be transferred to Urumqi Airport or Urumqi Railway Station for your flight or train to the next destination.

 

Alternatively, you may choose to take a train directly from Shanshan Railway Station to Dunhuang, which provides a convenient way to continue your Silk Road journey.

 

Your Urumqi, Turpan and Shanshan tour ends with your onward journey.
