Tiger Leaping Gorge
Tiger Leaping Gorge Jinsha River Yunnan ChinaLocated in the northwest of Yunnan Province, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest and most spectacular river canyons in China. Carved by the powerful Jinsha River (the upper reaches of the Yangtze River), the gorge is famous for its dramatic landscapes, towering snow mountains, roaring rapids, and world-class hiking trails.
Situated in Tiger Leaping Gorge Town, Shangri-La City, the scenic area is about 80 kilometers from Lijiang. Stretching approximately 17 kilometers, the gorge features a vertical elevation difference of more than 3,900 meters, making it one of the deepest canyons in the world.
With its breathtaking scenery and challenging hiking routes, Tiger Leaping Gorge has become one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Yunnan, attracting hikers from around the world since the 1980s.

A Canyon Between Two Snow Mountains
Tiger Leaping Gorge lies between two magnificent mountains:
* Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Snow Mountain) on the south bank, with its highest peak reaching 5,596 meters
* Haba Snow Mountain on the north bank, rising to 5,396 meters
The two snow-covered mountains stand face to face, creating a narrow passage where the Jinsha River rushes through steep cliffs and rocky formations.
At its narrowest point, the river channel is only about 50 meters wide. According to local legend, a tiger escaping from hunters once jumped across the river using a huge rock in the middle of the gorge, giving the area its name — Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Three Sections of Tiger Leaping Gorge
Tiger Leaping Gorge is traditionally divided into three sections: Upper Gorge, Middle Gorge, and Lower Gorge. Each section offers different landscapes and experiences.

The Upper Gorge is the most famous and accessible section. Here, the Jinsha River becomes extremely narrow, with the water rushing violently between towering cliffs.
The highlight is the legendary Tiger Leaping Stone, a giant rock standing in the middle of the river. According to local stories, a tiger once used this stone to leap across the gorge, inspiring the name of the canyon.
This section offers the classic viewpoint of the powerful river surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge
The Middle Gorge is considered the most impressive and adventurous section for hikers.
The river passes through numerous reefs and rapids, dropping more than 100 meters within a short distance. The roaring water, steep cliffs, and massive rock walls create one of the most dramatic landscapes along the Yangtze River.
The famous 18 Bends of the Sky Ladder and narrow cliffside trails make this section a highlight for experienced hikers.

Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge
The Lower Gorge is wider and calmer compared with the upper sections. The river becomes gentler, and visitors can enjoy broader views of the surrounding countryside.
From here, travelers can admire the magnificent scenery of both Haba Snow Mountain and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, while the Jinsha River flows peacefully through the valley.

Hiking in Tiger Leaping Gorge
Tiger Leaping Gorge is widely regarded as one of the best hiking routes in China. The famous High Trail Hiking Route usually starts from Qiaotou Town and follows the northern side of the gorge.
The classic trek takes around 2 days, passing through mountain paths, waterfalls, forests, and dramatic viewpoints overlooking the Jinsha River.
Along the trail, hikers can find local guesthouses and small inns offering accommodation and meals. These mountain lodges provide a comfortable place to rest while enjoying unforgettable views of the canyon.
For travelers who prefer not to hike, the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge sightseeing area can be reached by road. Visitors can walk along a relatively easy paved path to enjoy views of the famous Tiger Leaping Stone.

Spring (March–May) is one of the best seasons to visit. Melting snow from the mountains increases the water flow, making the Jinsha River especially powerful and spectacular.
Autumn (September–November) is another excellent period, with clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and beautiful mountain scenery.
Summer can be rainy, which may make hiking conditions more challenging, while winter offers quieter trails and clear views but colder weather.

How to Get to Tiger Leaping Gorge

From Lijiang
The most common route is:
Lijiang → Tiger Leaping Gorge Town → Scenic Area
* Distance: about 80 km
* Driving time: approximately 2–3 hours
Private cars, hired drivers, and organized tours are available from Lijiang.

Hiking Route
For the classic trekking experience:
Qiaotou Town → High Trail → Middle Gorge → Tiger Leaping Gorge
This route provides the best views and is highly recommended for outdoor enthusiasts.

Travel Tips
* Wear comfortable hiking shoes as some sections involve steep mountain paths.
* Bring enough water and snacks, especially during longer hikes.
* Weather changes quickly in mountain areas; prepare warm clothing even in summer.
* Visitors who want the full experience should allow at least two days for hiking.
Tiger Leaping Gorge combines powerful natural landscapes, ethnic culture, and unforgettable adventure. Whether you are an experienced trekker or a casual traveler, this legendary canyon is one of the must-see destinations in Yunnan.
