Chengdu – Mount Qingcheng Taoist Mountain – Dujiangyan Irrigation System – Chengdu
Your Chengdu cultural journey begins this morning. Your guide from China Exploration will pick you up from your hotel and drive approximately 1 hour to Mount Qingcheng (Qingchengshan), one of the most famous Taoist mountains in China.
During the drive, enjoy beautiful views of the fertile Chengdu Plain, traditional villages, and peaceful countryside landscapes. Along the way, you will see how local communities have rebuilt their homes and villages after the Sichuan earthquake, combining traditional Sichuan styles with modern living.
Upon arrival at Mount Qingcheng, take a cable car up the mountain and quickly reach the higher section of this beautiful Taoist mountain.
From there, begin a relaxing hike of about 30 minutes to Shangqing Palace, one of the most important Taoist temples on Mount Qingcheng.
Standing high above the forest, Shangqing Palace offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. On clear days, the landscape resembles a traditional Chinese ink painting, with rolling green mountains disappearing into soft mist and clouds.
After enjoying the scenery, follow the peaceful winding mountain paths downhill. This gentle hiking experience allows you to appreciate the fresh mountain air, beautiful forests, and the tranquil atmosphere that makes Qingcheng Mountain famous.
Continue to Tianshi Cave (Heavenly Master Cave), the most important Taoist temple complex on Mount Qingcheng.
According to tradition, this area is closely connected with Zhang Daoling, the founder of Taoism, who established Taoist teachings here nearly 2,000 years ago. Inside the temple area, you can admire the ancient architecture and a famous old ginkgo tree, traditionally believed to have been planted by Zhang Daoling himself.
During your visit, you will learn about the philosophy of Taoism, especially its ideas of harmony between humans and nature — a concept that has become increasingly appreciated around the world today.
For lunch, China Exploration will arrange a simple but special meal at a temple restaurant. Enjoying vegetarian-style temple food in this peaceful mountain environment offers a unique cultural experience.
After descending from Mount Qingcheng in the afternoon, drive approximately 20 minutes to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, one of China’s greatest ancient engineering achievements.
Built more than 2,000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty, Dujiangyan remains in operation today and continues to provide water management for the Chengdu Plain.
Unlike modern dams, Dujiangyan was designed to work together with the natural landscape. Ancient Chinese engineers carefully used the river’s flow, mountain terrain, and local geography to control floods and provide irrigation without blocking the river.
During your visit, you will discover the remarkable wisdom behind this ancient project and understand why Dujiangyan remains one of the most impressive examples of sustainable engineering in human history.
In the late afternoon, drive back to Chengdu by expressway (approximately 1 hour).
Your guide will transfer you back to your hotel, ending a wonderful day of Taoist culture, mountain scenery, and ancient Chinese engineering.
