Wuyuan Scenic Area
Huizhou ancient village in WuyuanLocated in the northeastern corner of Jiangxi Province, Wuyuan County is one of the most charming rural destinations in China. Known as “China’s Most Beautiful Countryside,” Wuyuan is famous for its picturesque landscapes, well-preserved ancient villages, traditional Huizhou architecture, and harmonious relationship between people and nature.
Situated along the Huangshan–Wuyuan–Lushan Golden Tourism Route, Wuyuan is surrounded by famous destinations in Jiangxi, Anhui, and Zhejiang provinces. Its central town, Ziyang, is approximately 140 kilometers from Quzhou in Zhejiang, 180 kilometers from Shangrao, 80 kilometers from Jingdezhen, and 114 kilometers from Huangshan.
With green mountains, clear rivers, traditional villages, and peaceful countryside scenery, Wuyuan has become one of the most attractive destinations for travelers seeking authentic rural China.

A Natural Paradise with Rich Ecology
Wuyuan is renowned for its outstanding natural environment. With a forest coverage rate of approximately 81.5%, the county is one of China’s most ecologically advanced agricultural regions.
Often described as the “Last Shangri-La of China,” Wuyuan resembles a vast natural park filled with mountains, forests, streams, and valleys.
Famous natural attractions include:
* Wengong Mountain – known for its beautiful mountain scenery and cultural significance
* Yuanyang Lake (Mandarin Duck Lake) – a peaceful ecological area famous for its natural beauty
* Lingyan Cave – a fascinating karst cave system with historic inscriptions
The combination of untouched landscapes and traditional rural life makes Wuyuan an ideal destination for nature lovers and photographers.

Ancient Villages and Huizhou Architecture
The greatest charm of Wuyuan lies in its beautifully preserved ancient villages and traditional Huizhou-style architecture.
Famous villages include:
* Jiangwan Village
* Likeng Village
* Wangkou Village
* Sixi Yancun Village
* Yan Village
* Huangling Village
The villages feature elegant houses with:
* Whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs
* Wooden carvings and stone decorations
* Ancient ancestral halls
* Narrow stone lanes
* Traditional courtyards
Hidden among green mountains and blue rivers, these historic buildings create a breathtaking landscape where architecture and nature exist in perfect harmony.
For many photographers, Wuyuan represents one of the finest examples of traditional Chinese countryside scenery.

Wuyuan countryside landscape Jiangxi ChinaA Land of Culture and Tradition
Beyond its natural beauty, Wuyuan has a rich cultural heritage and has produced many influential figures throughout Chinese history.
The county is the hometown of:
* Zhu Xi (1130–1200) – a renowned Neo-Confucian philosopher of the Southern Song Dynasty
* Zhan Tianyou (1861–1919) – known as the “Father of China’s Railways”
Historically, Wuyuan was also famous for education. More than 550 scholars from Wuyuan passed the highest imperial examinations during ancient China, reflecting the region’s strong academic tradition.
Wuyuan is also home to unique local cultural traditions, including:
* Hui Opera, an important influence on the development of Peking Opera
* Nuo Dance, known as a “living fossil” of ancient Chinese folk performance
* Traditional tea ceremonies
* Folk arts and local festivals
These cultural traditions add depth and character to Wuyuan’s scenic landscapes.

The Perfect Destination for Photography and Slow Travel
Located at the intersection of Jiangxi, Anhui, and Zhejiang provinces, Wuyuan is blessed with spectacular scenery, including:
* Strange rock formations
* Deep valleys
* Clear streams
* Historic villages
* Ancient bridges
* Traditional farmland landscapes
The remote location and limited development helped preserve the area’s original beauty for centuries. Visitors can still experience peaceful villages, clean streams, wooden houses, and a slow-paced rural lifestyle.
Every village in Wuyuan has its own unique charm. Some are famous for ancient architecture, some for riverside scenery, and others for seasonal landscapes such as the iconic spring rapeseed flower fields.

Why Visit Wuyuan?
Wuyuan is more than a sightseeing destination—it is a place where visitors can experience the timeless beauty of traditional China.
Whether you are interested in:
* Ancient architecture
* Rural photography
* Chinese culture and history
* Traditional villages
* Nature and eco-tourism
Wuyuan offers an unforgettable journey into one of China’s most beautiful countryside regions.
Often combined with nearby destinations such as Huangshan Mountain, Jingdezhen, Lushan Mountain, and Sanqing Mountain, Wuyuan is an essential destination for travelers exploring eastern China.
