Located in the northeast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guilin is one of China’s most famous tourist destinations, celebrated worldwide for its breathtaking karst landscapes, winding Li River, and unique natural scenery. Situated on the west bank of the Li River and bordering Hunan Province to the north, Guilin has become an iconic destination for travelers seeking China’s most beautiful landscapes.
The name “Guilin” means “Forest of Sweet Osmanthus”, referring to the large number of fragrant sweet osmanthus trees that grow throughout the city. With its dramatic limestone peaks, peaceful rivers, and rich cultural heritage, Guilin has long been regarded as one of the most picturesque places in China.
History of Guilin
Guilin has a history spanning more than 2,000 years. In 314 BC, during the Warring States Period, a small settlement was established along the banks of the Li River. During the Qin Dynasty (221–207 BC), after the Qin campaigns against the state of Nanyue, the first administrative system was established in the Guilin area.
In 111 BC, during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Shi’an County was established, marking the beginning of Guilin’s official urban history. In 507 AD, the city was renamed Guizhou.
Guilin Through the Dynasties
Guilin experienced significant development during the Tang and Song dynasties, although it remained administratively a county. Due to its strategic location between central China and the southwestern frontier, Guilin became an important military and transportation center.
During this period, canals were constructed through the city, allowing grain and supplies from the fertile Yangtze River Plain to be transported efficiently to the southwestern regions of the empire. This helped strengthen Guilin’s role as a vital connection between different parts of China.
Modern History of Guilin
In 1921, Guilin became one of the headquarters of the Northern Expeditionary Army led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, playing an important role in modern Chinese history.
In 1940, the city officially adopted its current name, Guilin. Due to its outstanding natural beauty and cultural significance, Guilin was listed by the State Council of China in 1981 as one of the country’s four priority cities for the protection of historical and cultural heritage and natural landscapes, together with Beijing, Hangzhou, and Suzhou.
