Day 1: Xiamen Arrival – Gulangyu Island
Upon arrival in Xiamen, meet your private driver and transfer to your hotel for check-in. In the afternoon, take a local ferry to Gulangyu Island, a beautiful island just off the coast of southwestern Xiamen.
The ferry ride takes only about 10 minutes. Gulangyu is renowned for its historic architecture, peaceful atmosphere, winding lanes, and strong musical heritage. Following the opening of Xiamen as a treaty port in the 19th century, the island became home to foreign communities, leaving behind a fascinating collection of Western-style historic buildings.
Gulangyu is also known as the “Island of Music” because of its long-standing connection with piano and classical music. During your visit, explore some of the island’s highlights, including Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang Garden.
Take a leisurely walk along the quiet lanes, admire the historic buildings, and browse the small local shops for interesting souvenirs.
Overnight in Xiamen.
Day 2: Xiamen – Gaobei Tulou – Chuxi Tulou Cluster
08:00 – Depart Xiamen
Your driver will pick you up from your hotel and drive approximately 2.5–3 hours to the Yongding Hakka Tulou area in Longyan, Fujian Province.
Along the way, enjoy the changing rural scenery, including banana plantations and other agricultural landscapes. Make a stop at a local tea plantation, where you can take a relaxing walk among the tea bushes, try picking tea leaves, or simply enjoy the fresh countryside air.
You will also visit a local tea house to watch a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and taste some of Fujian’s famous tea. Fujian is one of China’s major tea-producing regions and is particularly well known for its oolong and black teas.
11:00 – Gaobei Tulou Cluster
Arrive at the Gaobei Tulou Cluster and visit Chengqilou, one of the largest and most impressive circular Tulou buildings in the area.
Built nearly 300 years ago, Chengqilou consists of four concentric circular structures. Its enormous scale and distinctive design offer a fascinating introduction to the traditional architecture and communal lifestyle of the Hakka people.
12:00 – Chuxi Tulou Cluster
Continue to Chuxi Tulou Cluster and check in at a local Hakka family guesthouse.
Located in a picturesque mountain setting, Chuxi is home to several well-preserved Tulou buildings, including circular and rectangular earth buildings. Visit Jiqinglou, Shengqilou, and Yuqinglou to discover different examples of traditional Hakka Tulou architecture.
Jiqinglou, dating from the Ming Dynasty, is particularly notable for its distinctive circular design and numerous internal stairways. Shengqilou and Yuqinglou provide further examples of how Hakka families lived and organized their communities within these large earth buildings.
In the afternoon, visit a local Hakka family and chat with your hosts to learn about their daily life, traditions, and local customs. Later, climb to a nearby viewpoint for a panoramic bird’s-eye view of Chuxi Village.
The rest of the afternoon is free for you to stroll through the village and enjoy its peaceful mountain surroundings.
18:00 – Hakka Family Dinner
Enjoy a homemade dinner prepared by a local Hakka family and experience authentic local cuisine in a friendly family setting.

Day 3: Chuxi – Yantai Village – Nanxi Tulou Valley
08:00 – Chuxi Countryside Walk
Get up early and take a walk along the rural paths in the mountains behind Chuxi Village. Enjoy the idyllic countryside scenery, with terraced fields, winding streams, farmland, and traditional village landscapes.
Depending on the season, you may have the opportunity to pick local fruit and experience some simple traditional farming activities.
The terraced fields follow the natural contours of the hillsides, creating beautiful layers of farmland that stretch from the riverside toward the mountain slopes.
10:00 – Yantai Village
Continue to Yantai Village, a picturesque traditional Hakka village surrounded by mountains and terraced rice fields.
Take a leisurely walk through the village and enjoy the peaceful rural atmosphere. The traditional houses, rice terraces, and surrounding countryside provide an excellent opportunity to experience the traditional lifestyle and communal culture of the Hakka people.
14:00 – Nanxi Tulou Valley
In the afternoon, visit Nanxi Tulou Valley, often known as the “Great Wall of Tulou.” More than 100 earth buildings are scattered along a valley stretching for approximately 10 kilometers, creating an impressive landscape of traditional Hakka architecture.
Visit representative Tulou buildings such as Zhenfulou and Yanxianglou, and learn more about the history, architecture, and communal lifestyle of the Hakka people.
18:00 – Check in at Yanxianglou Family Hotel
Check in at Yanxianglou Family Hotel in Nanxi Village, Hukeng Town, and enjoy a relaxing evening in the countryside.
Overnight in Nanxi Village.
Day 4: Nanxi – Liancheng – Peitian Ancient Village – Xiamen
08:00 – Travel to Liancheng
After breakfast, depart Nanxi and drive to Liancheng to visit Peitian Ancient Village, one of the best-preserved traditional Hakka villages in Fujian.
Located near Guanzhai Mountain in Liancheng County, Peitian is sometimes referred to as the “Forbidden City of Southern China” because of its remarkable collection of historic residences, ancestral halls, temples, and traditional buildings.
The village has a history of more than 800 years, with its development dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Peitian developed as an important settlement along the routes connecting Liancheng and Changting.
Take a leisurely walk through the ancient village and explore its traditional houses, narrow lanes, courtyards, and ancestral halls. It is an excellent place to experience the architectural style and cultural heritage of the Hakka people.
15:00 – Return to Xiamen
After lunch, begin the drive back to Xiamen. You are expected to arrive in Xiamen at around 18:00, marking the end of your 4-day Xiamen and Fujian Hakka Tulou tour.
