Luhuhu Lake is actually shared by Ninglang county of Yunnan and Yanyuan County of Sichuan Province. In the east of Lake is Lugu Lake Town of Yanyuan County and west of Lake is Yongning Township of Ninglang County.
The lake is slightly north to southeast, with an area of 50.1 square kilometers and a reservoir capacity of 2.252 billion cubic meters. Luguhu Lake is a plateau fault erosion and subsidence lake, a tributary of the Yalong River, a tributary of the upper Yangtze River. It is the upper source of the Xiaojin River and flows to the Jinsha River through the Yalong River.
Lugu Lakehu, located in the Yongning Basin, is the third largest deep-water lake in China, with a small island in the lake. Luguhu Lake is mainly inhabited by the Mosuo, Yi and Pumi ethnic people, and there are seven Mongolian ethnic groups living along the coast, with about 13,000 people. Beautiful natural environment and strange ethnic customs, so that it has become a famous tourist attraction. Lugu Lake area has Lijiang Lugu Lake Mosuo Cultural tourism Area and Liangshan Lugu Lake tourist area.
Luguhu Lake has 5 whole islands, 3 peninsulas and 1 seawall island, which is generally 15 to 30 meters above the surface of the lake, surrounded by mountains. Goddess Mountain is high by the lake, and the middle of the lake, forming a horseshoe Lugu Lake.
The Gem Goddess Mountain, 3754.7 meters above sea level, is the highest peak around Lugu Lake. In the Mosuo mythology, this mountain is the embodiment of the goddess Germ. During the Festival of Walking Around Mountain, the Mosuo people went to the Goddess Mountain to offer sacrifices to the goddess.
Houlongshan mountain, a long island that wedge into the middle of Lugu Lake,
is 4 kilometers long. The hind dragon is the male mountain god in the legend of Mosuo, and the goddess are a favorite couple. They turned into a mountain island, and crossing the sea during the day, and spending a good night as "walking marriage", which is an unique custom of Luguhu area.
Niaojueshan Mountain, belongs to the Houlong mountain range, the forest hides the ancient road of “praying around the mountain ” of Mosuo people. The ancient road over the dragon ridge, can be through Boao Lake Bay, to the Luowa Mosuo tribal village.
Hewawu Island, Liwubi Island and Rige Island, located on the lake side of Ninglang, are located in the middle of the lake, 2500 meters away from the drowning village on the lake bank. It is the habitat of migratory birds and wild ducks from south to north to south. It is the water palace of the chief of Yongning Tusi, where American scholar Mr. Rock Joseph once lived.
Xiwae island, also known as "Tusi Island", Naxi language called "Hengwagu". More than 2,000 meters away from the lake shore, located in the middle of the northwest half lake.
Bowa Island, the last generation of Zuosuo Tusi built a special palace on it, to settle his Han Chinese wife, Ms Xiao Shuming, from Ya'an.
Caohai,means the sea of grass. Covering an area of 15,000 mu, Caohai is located in the east side of Lugu Lake. Many wildlife cound be see here, including 37 species of aquatic plants, 42 species of rare birds, 11 species of fish, shrimp, shellfish, snail, frog.
