Serthar - A Valley Of Buddha
Serthar Buddhist Institute (Larung Gar Buddhist Academy) is one of the largest and most influential centers for the study of Tibetan Buddhism in the world. Located in Larung Valley, about 20 kilometers from Serthar County in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, the institute is surrounded by remote mountains and high-altitude landscapes, creating a unique spiritual environment far from modern cities.
Founded in 1980 by Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok, a highly respected Nyingma master from the Kham region, the institute was established in an uninhabited valley at an altitude of around 4,000 meters. What began as a small Buddhist study center gradually developed into a vast community dedicated to Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and religious education.
Despite its remote location, Serthar Buddhist Institute has attracted thousands of students from around the world. At its peak, it became one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist learning centers, with thousands of monks, nuns, and lay practitioners gathering here to study Buddhist teachings.
One of the most distinctive features of Serthar is the large number of female practitioners. Unlike many traditional Tibetan Buddhist institutions where opportunities for female religious studies were limited, Serthar became an important place for nuns to receive systematic Buddhist education. The sight of thousands of monks and nuns living and studying on the surrounding hillsides has become one of the most unforgettable images of Tibetan Buddhist culture.
Serthar Buddhist Institute also attracts students from different cultural backgrounds. Besides Tibetan students, many Han Chinese practitioners and international visitors have come here to study Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and scriptures. Courses are taught mainly in Tibetan, with some classes offered in Mandarin.
The most impressive feature of Serthar is its extraordinary landscape of wooden meditation houses and residences covering the hillsides of Larung Valley. The dense clusters of red-roofed cabins stretching across the mountains create a breathtaking view, especially at sunrise and sunset. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the sound of Buddhist prayers and chanting, reflects the devotion of the thousands of practitioners who live here.
Visitors to Serthar can experience a rare glimpse into the daily life of Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns, including prayer ceremonies, religious studies, and traditional Buddhist practices. Surrounded by high mountains and untouched nature, the institute represents the enduring vitality of Tibetan Buddhism and the spiritual traditions of the Tibetan Plateau.
