Reed Flute Cave
Reed Flute Cave Guilin with colorful illuminated stalactites
Located about 5 kilometers northwest of downtown Guilin, Reed Flute Cave (Ludi Yan) is one of the most famous natural attractions in Guilin and a must-visit destination for travelers from China and abroad. Known as the “Palace of Natural Arts”, this spectacular limestone cave showcases the extraordinary beauty created by millions of years of geological evolution.
The cave is approximately 500 meters long and 250 meters deep, and visitors usually need about one hour to complete the tour. Its name comes from the green reeds growing outside the cave, which local people traditionally used to make flutes.
Inside the cave is a magnificent underground world filled with various stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains, and stone flowers. Formed through the long process of carbonate deposition, these natural formations appear in countless shapes and sizes. With colorful lighting illuminating the cave walls, the scenery becomes even more mysterious and dreamlike.

Highlights of Reed Flute Cave
The cave is divided into several scenic sections, each featuring unique landscapes inspired by nature, mythology, and traditional Chinese culture.

Morning Glow Over Lion Forest
This impressive formation resembles a vast forest filled with ancient trees, lush vegetation, and groups of lions. Under colorful lights, the stone formations appear lively and dynamic, creating the illusion of lions playing among the forest at sunrise.

Half a Poem Terrace
A beautiful white calcite formation hangs from the ceiling like a waterfall cascading from the sky. Together with surrounding peaks and clouds, it creates a poetic scene that inspired many visitors.

Stone Tortoise with Billowy Waves
This scene features a small stone formation resembling a tortoise resting between waves. According to legend, Guilin was once covered by the sea millions of years ago, and the stone tortoise remained after geological changes transformed the area into today’s famous karst landscape.

Pagoda-shaped Pine Defying the Snow
Spectacular limestone formations inside Reed Flute Cave ChinaA tall stone pillar shaped like a pine tree standing proudly in the snow symbolizes strength and perseverance. The formation reflects the traditional Chinese appreciation of the pine tree as a symbol of resilience.

A Scene of Rich Harvests
This area features stone formations resembling fruits, vegetables, and crops, creating a unique underground landscape representing abundance and a good harvest.

Penglai Wonderland
Inspired by the legendary paradise of Penglai Island in Chinese mythology, this section features delicate rock formations resembling rare plants, herbs, and a peaceful fairyland.

Scarlet Stony Wall
The colorful stone wall displays shades of red, yellow, white, gray, and black. These natural colors were formed through the long-term deposition of minerals carried by underground water.

More Amazing Scenes Inside Reed Flute Cave
Beyond these famous formations, visitors can discover many other fascinating landscapes, including:
* Jade Cameo – a stone formation resembling a traditional Chinese carved jade artwork
* Ding-dong Lyre – a natural stone instrument that produces musical sounds when gently struck
* Crystal Palace – a magnificent hall of sparkling formations inspired by the Dragon King’s underwater palace in Chinese mythology
* Making a Havoc in the Dragon Palace – a scene based on the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West
* Immortal Stones – eight stalagmites resembling legendary immortals
* Gazing at Hilly City in Distance – a landscape resembling Guilin’s famous mountains and rivers
* Listening to Flute-playing in Secluded Recess – a scene connected with the legend behind the cave’s name
These imaginative names reflect the creativity of local people who combined natural formations with Chinese legends and cultural stories.
Enjoy Guilin’s Landscape from Reed Flute Cave
After exploring the cave, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Guilin’s famous scenery from nearby viewing areas. The landscape features the city’s signature combination of green mountains, clear rivers, unique caves, and unusual rock formations.
With its spectacular karst formations, colorful underground scenery, and fascinating cultural legends, Reed Flute Cave is one of the best places to experience the natural beauty and geological wonders of Guilin.
