Li River
The Li River (Lijiang River) is one of the most famous scenic rivers in China and the symbol of Guilin’s natural beauty. Originating in the Mao’er Mountains in Xing’an County, Guangxi, the river flows southward through some of the region’s most spectacular landscapes, passing through Guilin, Yangshuo, and Pingle.
After reaching Pingle, the Li River joins two other waterways and continues south as the Gui River, eventually flowing into the Xi River (Xijiang River), the western branch of the Pearl River, in Wuzhou.
History of the Li River Waterway
The upper reaches of the Li River were historically connected with the Xiang River through the ancient Lingqu Canal, one of China’s oldest artificial waterways. This connection linked the Yangtze River basin in northern China with the Pearl River Delta in the south, making the Li and Gui Rivers an important transportation route for trade and cultural exchange throughout history.
