Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains – China's Most Colorful Landscape
Known as the “Eye Candy of Zhangye,” the Zhangye Danxia Landform is one of China's most spectacular natural wonders, often described by artists as a masterpiece painted on nature’s canvas. Covering around 400 square kilometers across Linze and Sunan counties in Gansu Province, this breathtaking landscape features layers of colorful mountains, creating a scene unlike anywhere else in the world.
Formed over 6 million years ago, the Zhangye Danxia landscape was shaped by the erosion of red sandstone and conglomerate rocks. Millions of years of geological movement, weathering, freeze-thaw processes, and wind and water erosion have sculpted its unique peaks, cliffs, valleys, and vibrant rock patterns.
The mountains display stunning shades of red, orange, yellow, green, and blue, with their dramatic stripes and contours resembling a giant natural painting. Geologists consider Zhangye Danxia a remarkable example of Danxia landform, created by the uplift of the Earth's crust and the gradual erosion of different rock layers.
Often called “China’s Rainbow Mountains,” Zhangye Danxia has gained worldwide attention for its extraordinary colors and surreal beauty, making it one of the must-see destinations on China's Silk Road.
