The People's Great Hall of Chongqing
The Chongqing People’s Great Hall, also known as the Chongqing People’s Auditorium, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Chongqing, China. Located at No. 173 Renmin Road, Yuzhong District, directly opposite the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, the Great Hall is a masterpiece of traditional Chinese architecture and one of the city’s most important cultural symbols.
Construction began in June 1951 and was completed in April 1954. Designed in the style of a grand imperial palace, the building combines the elegance of traditional Chinese architecture with advanced large-span engineering techniques, creating one of the finest examples of modern public architecture in China. Today, it serves as a major venue for political meetings, cultural performances, conferences, and public events.

Architecture
The Chongqing People’s Great Hall consists of four main sections: the central auditorium and the East, South, and North Buildings. The entire complex covers 66,000 square meters, while the main auditorium occupies 18,500 square meters.
The auditorium stands 65 meters high, with an interior height of 55 meters beneath its magnificent dome, which measures 46.33 meters in diameter. The circular hall is surrounded by a four-story gallery and can accommodate more than 3,400 visitors, making it one of the largest assembly halls in western China.
Its sweeping glazed-tile roof, elegant upturned eaves, symmetrical layout, and majestic columns reflect the grandeur of traditional Chinese palace architecture, while its innovative structural design demonstrates remarkable engineering achievements of the 20th century.

Cultural Significance
As one of the Top Ten Cultural Symbols of Chongqing, the People’s Great Hall has become an enduring symbol of the city. Together with the nearby Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum and People’s Square, it forms one of Chongqing’s most recognizable architectural landmarks and is among the city’s most popular tourist attractions.
The building has received national and international recognition for its architectural excellence. In 1987, it was featured in A History of Comparative Architecture, published by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), where it ranked second among 42 representative examples of modern architecture selected worldwide.
In May 2013, the State Council of China designated the Chongqing People’s Great Hall as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. In September 2016, it was also included in the First Batch of China’s 20th-Century Architectural Heritage, recognizing its outstanding historical, architectural, and cultural value.

Why Visit Chongqing People’s Great Hall?
Whether you are interested in architecture, history, photography, or urban culture, the Chongqing People’s Great Hall is a must-visit attraction. Visitors can admire its magnificent palace-style design, explore the surrounding People’s Square, and visit the neighboring Three Gorges Museum to gain deeper insights into the history and culture of Chongqing and the Yangtze River region.
As one of the city’s most photographed landmarks, the Chongqing People’s Great Hall offers a perfect blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and cultural heritage, making it an essential stop on any Chongqing travel itinerary.
