Jiefangbei Monument and Street
The Jiefangbei Monument, officially known as the Monument to the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the People’s Liberation, stands at the heart of Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street in Yuzhong District, Chongqing. As one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, it is not only the geographical and commercial center of Chongqing but also a powerful symbol of the Chinese people’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931–1945).
Construction of the monument began on October 31, 1946, and was completed in August 1947. It is the only national monument in China dedicated to commemorating the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, making it one of the country’s most historically significant memorials. Today, Jiefangbei represents both the spirit of national resilience and the liberation of Chongqing, serving as an enduring symbol of patriotism and peace.
The monument is an eight-sided reinforced concrete structure with its main façade facing north and east. Standing 27.5 meters high, it features a distinctive clock tower topped with a large bell, which has become one of Chongqing’s best-known landmarks. Beneath the monument lies an eight-level underground structure, with an internal staircase leading to the upper sections. The monument is surrounded by landscaped flower beds covering approximately 62 square meters, while the protected heritage area extends to 642 square meters.
Today, the Jiefangbei Monument forms the centerpiece of Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, Chongqing’s premier shopping, dining, entertainment, and financial district. Surrounded by modern skyscrapers, luxury shopping malls, international hotels, restaurants, and vibrant nightlife, the area perfectly blends the city’s historical heritage with its dynamic urban development. It is one of the most popular destinations for both domestic and international visitors.
In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, the Jiefangbei Monument was selected as one of the Top Ten Cultural Symbols of Chongqing in May 2016. In September 2016, it was also included in the First Batch of China’s 20th-Century Architectural Heritage, highlighting its outstanding historical, architectural, and cultural value.
Today, the Jiefangbei Monument remains one of Chongqing’s most recognizable landmarks and an essential stop for visitors seeking to experience the city’s rich history, vibrant commercial atmosphere, and modern skyline. Its unique combination of historical importance and contemporary urban culture makes it one of the most visited attractions in southwest China.
