Three Gorges Museum of Chongqing
The Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, also known as the Chongqing Museum, is located on Renmin Road in Yuzhong District, Chongqing. As one of China’s most important museums dedicated to the history and culture of the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges region, it covers a site area of 50,000 square meters, with a total floor area of 71,700 square meters and 31,000 square meters of exhibition space.
Established in March 1951, the museum was renamed the Chongqing Museum in June 1955, before reopening as the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum on June 18, 2005. The museum complex consists of five major institutions: the Main Museum, the Baiheliang Underwater Museum, the Soong Ching Ling Memorial Hall, the Tushan Kiln Site, and the Chongqing Three Gorges Cultural Relics Conservation and Technology Center. Together with the neighboring Chongqing People’s Square and People’s Great Hall, the museum forms one of Chongqing’s most recognizable cultural landmarks.

The museum features an impressive exhibition system comprising four permanent exhibitions, six themed exhibitions, a 360-degree immersive theater, a large panoramic scene display, an interactive education center, and three temporary exhibition halls. Its collection includes more than 115,000 cultural relics and over 18,000 rare ancient books, covering 23 categories of historical artifacts. The museum is particularly renowned for its collections of Three Gorges cultural relics, Bayu bronzes, Han Dynasty artifacts, Southwest ethnic minority cultural relics, Second Sino-Japanese War historical collections, porcelain, traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy, guqin (ancient Chinese zither), and ancient human fossils.
The permanent exhibitions vividly present the natural environment, archaeological discoveries, cultural heritage, and historical development of the Three Gorges region and Chongqing. Through a combination of authentic artifacts, multimedia displays, immersive experiences, and modern exhibition technology, visitors can explore the evolution of the Yangtze River civilization, the culture of the ancient Ba and Shu kingdoms, and the remarkable history of the Three Gorges Project and regional development.
In recognition of its cultural significance, the museum was selected as one of the “New Landmarks of the Bashu Cultural Tourism Corridor” in 2020. In 2022, it became one of China’s first National Science Popularization Education Bases (2021–2025). In 2023, it was listed among China’s Top 100 Most Popular Museums based on online searches and was also included by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as one of the key attractions on the National Yangtze River Heritage Tourism Routes, highlighting its importance in preserving and showcasing the origins of Yangtze River civilization.
