Badaling Remnant Great Wall
Located in Donggou Village, Badaling Town, Yanqing District, approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of central Beijing, the Badaling Remnant Great Wall lies about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the famous Badaling Great Wall. It forms an important western section of the defensive system surrounding the Badaling area.
Seen from a distance, the ruined wall resembles a giant dragon winding along the mountain ridges. Steep peaks, deep valleys, high ramparts, and rugged terrain give this section a dramatic and imposing appearance. Unlike the extensively restored Badaling Great Wall, the Remnant Great Wall retains much of its original character, with weathered walls and partially collapsed structures offering visitors a more authentic glimpse into the passage of time.
The site is associated with important events in Chinese history. In 1644, as the Ming Dynasty was collapsing, Li Zicheng and his rebel forces advanced toward Beijing, eventually capturing the capital and bringing the Ming Dynasty to an end. The area also preserves archaeological evidence related to the construction of the Great Wall, including the remains of a stone-working site and groups of brick kilns that once supplied building materials for the fortifications.
The surviving section is approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) long, although only a small portion is currently open to visitors. Two hiking routes allow visitors to explore the rugged landscape and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Great Wall.
One of the area's other attractions is a natural cave located about 200 meters north of the remnant wall. Inside the cave is a stone Buddha statue carved several centuries ago. The well-preserved figure is approximately 2.85 meters (9.3 feet) high and represents a rare example of historic stone carving in the Beijing region.
For travelers seeking a quieter and more rugged Great Wall experience, the Badaling Remnant Great Wall offers a striking contrast to the heavily restored Badaling section. Its weathered stones, dramatic mountain scenery, and archaeological remains provide a powerful sense of the Great Wall as a living historical landscape rather than simply a restored wall.
