Your Chengdu day tour starts early in the morning at around 7:30. Your guide and driver from China Exploration will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, located about 10 kilometers north of downtown Chengdu.
The Giant Panda Base is one of the best places in China to observe these adorable animals in a natural and carefully protected environment. During your visit, you will have the chance to watch giant pandas eating bamboo, climbing trees, and playing with each other. Walking through the peaceful bamboo gardens while taking photos of these charming creatures is a wonderful and unforgettable experience.
After visiting the Panda Base, your driver will take you to Leshan City by expressway, with a journey of approximately 2 hours. Along the way, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Chengdu Plain, with its fertile farmland and picturesque countryside landscapes.
At noon, China Exploration will arrange a special local dining experience for you. Enjoy a delicious Xiba Tofu Banquet, one of Leshan’s most famous culinary specialties. Xiba tofu is known for its delicate texture, rich flavor, and traditional cooking techniques. This local feast offers a wonderful opportunity to discover authentic Sichuan cuisine beyond the famous spicy dishes.
In the afternoon, your guide will take you to explore the magnificent Leshan Giant Buddha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most impressive ancient Buddhist sculptures in the world. Standing at the meeting point of the Minjiang River, Dadu River, and Qingyi River, the giant statue creates the breathtaking scene described as: “The Buddha is a mountain, and the mountain is a Buddha.”
You will first visit Lingyun Temple, which is closely connected with the history of the Giant Buddha. More than 1,000 years ago, the Buddhist monk Haitong initiated this enormous project in the hope of calming the dangerous river currents and protecting local people. Despite facing many challenges, he and later generations of craftsmen successfully completed this extraordinary masterpiece.
Afterward, you will walk along the winding path beside the Giant Buddha, allowing you to appreciate the statue from different perspectives. From the head and shoulders to the feet, the scale of this stone sculpture is truly impressive. The hiking route takes around 30 minutes and provides excellent views of the Buddha’s details as well as the surrounding rivers and landscape.
Continue your walk to the other side of the mountain and visit Wuyou Temple, where you can admire the beautiful Buddhist statues of the 500 Arhats. The peaceful temple environment and panoramic views of Leshan make it a perfect ending to your visit.
In the late afternoon, your guide and driver will escort you back to Chengdu. The approximately 2-hour drive provides a relaxing opportunity to rest after the Buddha hiking experience.
Upon arrival in Chengdu, your guide will transfer you back to your hotel or airport. Your Chengdu Panda Base and Leshan Giant Buddha tour concludes with wonderful memories of giant pandas, local cuisine, and ancient Buddhist culture.
