Day 1: Chengdu – Bifengxia Panda Base – Bifengxia Gorge Hiking – Shangli Ancient Town
(Lunch, Dinner)
Your Sichuan adventure begins in Chengdu this morning. Your guide from China Exploration will pick you up from your hotel and drive approximately 2 hours to Bifengxia Panda Base, enjoying beautiful views of the fertile Sichuan Plain along the way.
Located near Ya’an City, Bifengxia Panda Base is one of the most famous giant panda research and conservation centers in China. Here, you will have the opportunity to observe these adorable animals living in a spacious natural environment. Watch the pandas eating bamboo, climbing trees, and making amusing movements while playing with each other. Taking photos of these lovely creatures is a wonderful experience and a memorable highlight of your Chengdu panda tour.
With a donation to support panda conservation, you may even have the rare opportunity to get close to a giant panda and take a special photo together — an unforgettable experience for animal lovers.
After a simple local Chinese lunch, continue your journey with a relaxing Bifengxia Gorge hiking tour. The approximately 2-hour easy hike takes you through a beautiful natural landscape featuring green forests, impressive waterfalls, dramatic rock formations, and traditional bridges. Along the trail, you may also discover different local plants and wildlife while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of Sichuan’s countryside.
In the late afternoon, drive about 30 minutes to Shangli Ancient Town, a charming historic town hidden in the mountains of western Sichuan.
Shangli Ancient Town was once an important stop along the ancient Tea Horse Road, a historic trade route connecting Sichuan with Tibetan areas. After modern expressways changed the transportation routes, this old town gradually became a quiet countryside retreat, preserving its traditional appearance and peaceful lifestyle.
Stroll along the ancient streets, admire wooden houses and old stone bridges, enjoy local tea in a traditional teahouse, and experience the slow rhythm of rural Sichuan life.
To make your journey more authentic and memorable, tonight you will stay in a local guesthouse located inside the old town. Away from the noise of modern cities, enjoy the peaceful evening atmosphere and taste traditional local dishes for dinner.
Day 2: Shangli Ancient Town – Leshan Giant Buddha – Chengdu
(Breakfast, Lunch)
Wake up to the peaceful morning atmosphere of Shangli Ancient Town. After a simple Chinese breakfast, continue your journey to the world-famous Leshan Giant Buddha, with approximately 2 hours’ driving through beautiful western Sichuan countryside.
After arriving in Leshan and enjoying lunch, your guide will introduce you to the incredible wonder known as:
“The mountain is a Buddha, and the Buddha is a mountain.”
The Leshan Giant Buddha is the largest stone Buddha statue in the world, carved directly into the red sandstone cliffs overlooking the meeting point of the Minjiang River, Dadu River, and Qingyi River.
You will first visit Lingyun Temple, then walk down the winding pathway beside the Buddha to appreciate this magnificent ancient masterpiece from different perspectives. The statue is truly enormous — from the head to the shoulders and from the legs to the feet, the entire viewing route takes around 30 minutes of hiking.
After reaching the bottom of the Buddha, continue hiking back up on the opposite side. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of Leshan city, the surrounding rivers, and the beautiful landscape of Sichuan.
Your visit continues to Wuyou Temple, where you can admire hundreds of ancient Buddhist statues, including the famous collection of 500 Arhats.
In the late afternoon, drive back to Chengdu (approximately 2 hours). After a rewarding day of hiking and cultural exploration, relax in the comfortable vehicle and enjoy a short rest before arriving at your hotel.
Your 2-day Chengdu panda and Leshan Giant Buddha tour ends in the late afternoon with unforgettable memories of Sichuan’s wildlife, history, and countryside culture.
