Puppet, or puppetry has a long history in China. In ancient times, puppets were known by various names, including figure-heads, Fukui puppets, and puppet figures, while performances featuring puppets were generally known as puppet shows.
The origins of Chinese puppet can be traced back to ancient times, and its earliest forms may have been associated with the funerary figures used during China’s slave society.
Puppetry is a form of theatrical performance in which actors manipulate puppets to present stories, characters, music, and dramatic scenes. Chinese puppetry emerged during the Han Dynasty and underwent significant development during the Tang Dynasty, when puppets were increasingly used to perform song-and-dance dramas.
The Song Dynasty was a crucial period in the development of Chinese puppetry. Puppet-making craftsmanship and manipulation techniques became increasingly sophisticated, allowing performances to become more vivid and expressive. With the growth of the social economy, puppetry became widespread throughout China during the Ming Dynasty. It was particularly prosperous in the economically developed regions of southern China, where it became known as the “Southern Puppet Arts.”
After the Qing Dynasty, Chinese puppetry entered a period of flourishing development. Puppet performances became increasingly popular, while different styles and vocal traditions emerged across the country. Notable forms included Western Liaoning Puppetry, Zhangzhou Glove Puppetry, Quanzhou Puppetry, Jinjiang Glove Puppetry, Shaoyang Glove Puppetry, Gaozhou Puppetry, Chaozhou Rod Puppetry, Northern Sichuan Puppetry, Shiqian Puppetry, Yang Puppetry, Taishun Medicine-Puppet Theatre, and Lingao Figure Puppetry.
According to the method of manipulation and performance, Chinese puppetry can generally be divided into five major types: string puppets, rod-head puppets, glove puppets, rod puppets, and medicine puppets. Each style has its own distinctive techniques, craftsmanship, performance traditions, and regional characteristics, making Chinese puppetry an important part of the country's traditional performing arts.
