Taer Monastery and Qinghai Lake Two Days Tour
Xining is located on the eastern edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the upper reaches of Huangshui River. It is the political, economic, scientific and technological, cultural and traffic center of Qinghai Province with an average altitude of over 2,200 meters (about 7,217 feet). The activities of human beings in this region can be traced to 2,100 years ago.
During the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties, owing to its developing agriculture, Xining was paid more attention due to its economic and martial significance. As well as being the important hinge between the central plains and the western part of China in ancient time, Xining was the most common passing channel of the famous Silk Road. Until now, it is still the only road by which to enter the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Ta'er Lamasery derives its name from the Golden-roofed Lamasery's silver tower built in memory of Zongkaba,the founder of Huangjiao (the YellowSection). The silver tower is called 'Gunbenxianbalin', inTibetan, meaning "a Maitreya Lamasery where 100000 lions roar at a Buddha Portrait."Ta'er Lamasery is located in the Lianhuashan (Lotus) Mountain Valley in the southwest ofLusha'er Township in Huangzhong County.It is the most important sight-seeing sport of Qinghai and one of the cultural relics under thestate protection.
Qinghai Lake is a saline lake situated in the province of Qinghai, and is the largest lake in China. Qinghai and Kokonor both mean "Blue/Teal Sea" in Standard Mandarin and Mongolian. It is located about 100 kilometers (62 mi) west of the provincial capital of Xining at 3,205 m (10,515 feet) above sea level in a depression of the Tibetan Plateau in the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo. D1 Ta’er Monastery – Sun and Moon Mountain – Qinghai Lake
In the morning, your local guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Xining and begin your journey to Ta’er Monastery, one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Qinghai.
Ta’er Monastery is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. In Tibetan, the monastery is known as “Gonlung Jampa Ling,” while its Chinese name, Ta’er, refers to the monastery’s famous association with a pagoda and the birthplace of Tsongkhapa.
Explore the monastery complex and admire its distinctive Tibetan Buddhist architecture, colorful murals, intricate sculptures and traditional religious artworks. Your guide will introduce you to the history of the monastery and its importance in Tibetan Buddhist culture.
After the visit, continue toward Sun and Moon Mountain (Riyue Mountain), an important geographical and cultural landmark on the route to Qinghai Lake. Stop at the Sun Pavilion and Moon Pavilion and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and highland grasslands.
Continue your journey to Qinghai Lake, China’s largest inland saltwater lake. Located at an elevation of around 3,200 meters, the lake is surrounded by vast grasslands and mountains, creating one of the most impressive landscapes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Enjoy the beautiful scenery around the lake and take a leisurely walk along the lakeshore before checking in to your hotel near Qinghai Lake.

D2 Qinghai Lake – Birdwatching – Xining
After breakfast, spend the morning exploring the beautiful surroundings of Qinghai Lake.
Qinghai Lake is an important habitat for migratory birds and is particularly attractive to birdwatchers during the spring and summer migration and breeding seasons. Depending on the season and local conditions, you may see species such as bar-headed geese, great black-headed gulls, swans and other waterbirds around the lake and its wetlands.
The Bird Island area on the western side of Qinghai Lake has long been known as an important bird habitat. Take time to appreciate the peaceful lake scenery and observe the rich birdlife of this high-altitude ecosystem.
After your Qinghai Lake sightseeing, drive back to Xining. Upon arrival, your guide and driver will transfer you to your hotel or Xining Airport/Railway Station according to your schedule.
