Full-Day Qinghai Lake Exploration Tour
Xining is located on the eastern edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the upper reaches of Huangshui River. It is the political, economic, scientific and technological, cultural and traffic center of Qinghai Province with an average altitude of over 2,200 meters (about 7,217 feet). The activities of human beings in this region can be traced to 2,100 years ago.
During the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties, owing to its developing agriculture, Xining was paid more attention due to its economic and martial significance. As well as being the important hinge between the central plains and the western part of China in ancient time, Xining was the most common passing channel of the famous Silk Road. Until now, it is still the only road by which to enter the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Qinghai Lake is a saline lake situated in the province of Qinghai, and is the largest lake in China. Qinghai and Kokonor both mean "Blue/Teal Sea" in Standard Mandarin and Mongolian. It is located about 100 kilometers (62 mi) west of the provincial capital of Xining at 3,205 m (10,515 feet) above sea level in a depression of the Tibetan Plateau in the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo. Twenty-three rivers and streams empty into Qinghai Lake, most of them seasonal. Five permanent streams provide 80% of total influx.

D1 One-Day Qinghai Lake Tour
In the morning, your local guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Xining and drive approximately 2 hours to Qinghai Lake, one of the most spectacular natural attractions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
En route, you will pass Sun and Moon Mountain, an important geographical and cultural landmark on the ancient route between the agricultural areas of China and the Tibetan Plateau. You will also have an opportunity to visit a local Tibetan monastery, where you can learn more about Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the cultural heritage of Qinghai.
Continue your journey to Qinghai Lake, known in Chinese as Qinghai Hu, meaning “Blue Sea.” Located in northeastern Qinghai Province, the lake is China’s largest inland saltwater lake and one of the most impressive high-altitude lakes in the country. Sitting at an elevation of about 3,200 meters above sea level, Qinghai Lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, grasslands and vast open landscapes, creating spectacular scenery throughout the year.
Take a leisurely walk along the lakeshore and enjoy panoramic views of the deep-blue water and surrounding mountains. During the warmer months, the grasslands around the lake are covered with wildflowers, while the area is also an important habitat for migratory birds. The famous Bird Island area is particularly well known for its rich birdlife.
Qinghai Lake is also an important cultural region inhabited by several ethnic groups, including Tibetan and Hui communities. The combination of highland scenery, grasslands, Tibetan culture and local traditions makes the lake an excellent destination for experiencing the distinctive character of Qinghai.
