Tianzifang
Tianzifang Shanghai Shikumen alley street view
Located in Shanghai’s former French Concession area, Tianzifang is one of the city’s most charming and artistic neighborhoods. Hidden among traditional Shikumen houses and narrow alleyways, Tianzifang has transformed from an old residential area into a lively cultural district filled with art studios, boutique shops, cafés, galleries, and creative spaces.
Unlike newly developed commercial areas, Tianzifang preserves the authentic atmosphere of old Shanghai. The combination of historic architecture, local life, and contemporary creativity makes it one of the most attractive places for visitors seeking a unique Shanghai experience.

A Hidden Artistic Neighborhood in Old Shanghai
Walking south along Sinan Road and turning onto Taikang Road, visitors will find the entrance to Tianzifang hidden behind an unassuming archway at Alley 210. The narrow lanes lead into Taikang Art Street, the heart of the district, from where a network of small alleys extends in different directions.
The area is filled with converted Shikumen houses that now serve as:
* Independent designer boutiques
* Coffee shops and restaurants
* Handmade jewelry stores
* Art galleries
* Interior design studios
* Creative workshops
The original brick walls, stone gates, and narrow lanes remain, creating a special atmosphere where traditional Shanghai meets modern artistic expression.

Tianzifang vs. Xintiandi: Two Different Shanghai Experiences
Tianzifang is often compared with Xintiandi, but the two districts offer very different experiences.
While Xintiandi features carefully restored and modernized Shikumen-style buildings, Tianzifang retains more of its original residential character. Its slightly weathered walls, winding alleyways, and everyday neighborhood life give it a more authentic and nostalgic feeling.
Even today, local residents continue to live among the boutiques and cafés. Visitors may see laundry hanging outside windows, elderly residents walking through the lanes, and traditional Shanghai life continuing alongside fashionable shops.
This unique mixture of old and new is what makes Tianzifang especially attractive.

Tianzifang is one of the best places in Shanghai to discover independent design and local creativity. Instead of large international brands, visitors will find unique handmade products, artistic souvenirs, original fashion designs, and creative home decorations.
Popular shopping experiences include:

Insh Store
The name Insh comes from the phrase “In Shanghai.” This boutique is a great place for fashion lovers, offering designer clothing including women’s dresses, tops, men’s coats, shirts, and other stylish items inspired by contemporary Shanghai trends.

Boutique Cashmere Lover
For high-quality sweaters and elegant cashmere products, Boutique Cashmere Lover is a popular choice. Some designs feature traditional Chinese patterns, while others focus on simple and refined styles.

Deke Erh Art Culture
Owned by famous Shanghai photographer and author Deke Erh, this cultural space features an impressive collection of books, photography works, and artistic materials. It provides visitors with insight into Shanghai’s history, culture, and visual arts.

Unique Hill
Unique Hill is a gallery specializing in Shanghai-themed posters and photography. The works displayed showcase different perspectives of the city and highlight Shanghai’s unique charm.

Art Galleries and Cultural Spaces
Beyond shopping, Tianzifang is also a gathering place for young artists and creative communities.

Jugend
Jugend is a popular space for movie enthusiasts, combining film appreciation with wine, coffee, and cultural conversations. With a relaxed artistic atmosphere, it provides a place for visitors to enjoy international cinema and creative exchanges.

The Gallery
The Gallery is a small but inspiring art space featuring paintings by young Chinese artists. Although compact in size, the gallery displays works full of imagination, personality, and creativity. The exhibits are frequently changed, allowing visitors to discover fresh artistic expressions.

Why Visit Tianzifang?
Tianzifang offers a different side of Shanghai compared with the city’s modern skyscrapers and shopping malls. It is a place where visitors can explore historic Shikumen architecture, experience local neighborhood life, discover independent design, and enjoy Shanghai’s contemporary art scene.
For travelers interested in photography, culture, shopping, and authentic urban experiences, Tianzifang is one of Shanghai’s must-visit destinations.
