Shanghai Museum
Shanghai Museum building at People’s Square Shanghai
Located in the heart of Shanghai at People’s Square, Shanghai Museum is one of China’s most renowned museums of ancient Chinese art. It is internationally recognized for its outstanding collections of bronze ware, ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, and other historical treasures.
The museum houses more than 1 million cultural objects, including approximately 120,000 precious national-grade artworks. Its exceptional collection of ancient Chinese bronzes, ceramics, paintings, and calligraphy has earned worldwide recognition and makes it one of the best places to explore China’s long and fascinating history.
With its combination of traditional culture, artistic treasures, and modern exhibition facilities, Shanghai Museum is a must-visit attraction for travelers interested in Chinese history and art.

History and Development of Shanghai Museum
Shanghai Museum was officially founded in 1952 and was first opened to the public in the former Shanghai Race Club building at 325 West Nanjing Road. In 1959, the museum moved to the former Zhonghui Building at 16 South Henan Road, where it continued to expand its collections, research programs, conservation work, exhibitions, and international cultural exchanges.
In 1992, the Shanghai municipal government selected a prime location at People’s Square as the site for a new museum building. Construction began in August 1993 and was completed three years later. The new Shanghai Museum officially opened on October 12, 1996.
The present building covers a construction area of approximately 39,200 square meters and reaches a height of 29.5 meters. Its unique design combines traditional Chinese philosophy with modern architecture. The building features a round upper structure and a square base, representing the ancient Chinese concept of “round heaven and square earth.”

Architectural Design and Exhibition Galleries
The architecture of Shanghai Museum is one of its most distinctive features. The combination of a circular roof and square foundation reflects traditional Chinese cosmology while creating a modern and elegant appearance.
Inside the museum, visitors can explore:
* 11 permanent galleries
* 3 special temporary exhibition halls
The exhibitions cover a wide range of Chinese cultural treasures, including:
* Ancient Chinese bronze vessels
* Chinese ceramics
* Calligraphy masterpieces
* Traditional Chinese paintings
* Ancient sculptures
* Jade and seals
* Furniture and decorative arts
Through carefully designed exhibitions, Shanghai Museum provides visitors with a comprehensive introduction to the development of Chinese civilization over thousands of years.
