Muslism street

Xi'an Muslim Quarter traditional street Shaanxi ChinaLocated in the heart of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, the Muslim Quarter (回民街, Huimin Street) is one of the city’s most famous cultural and culinary destinations. Situated north of West Street near the historic city center, the quarter is the traditional home of Xi’an’s Muslim community and has become a must-visit attraction for travelers exploring the ancient capital.
Covering several blocks and home to more than 20,000 Muslim residents, the Muslim Quarter preserves a unique blend of Islamic culture, traditional Chinese architecture, local cuisine, and centuries-old customs.
The area contains several historic mosques, among which the Great Mosque of Xi’an (Huajue Lane Great Mosque) is the most famous. With its unique combination of Chinese architectural styles and Islamic religious elements, it is one of the most important Islamic heritage sites in China.

A Historic Center of Xi’an’s Muslim Community
The history of the Muslim Quarter dates back many centuries. During the Tang Dynasty, Xi’an (then known as Chang’an) was the starting point of the ancient Silk Road and an international city where merchants, travelers, and diplomats from Central Asia, Persia, and other regions gathered.
Many foreign merchants and envoys settled in Chang’an, married locally, and formed communities that gradually developed into today’s Muslim population in Xi’an. Most residents of the Muslim Quarter are descendants of these early immigrants and continue to preserve their religious traditions, cultural practices, and unique lifestyle.
Despite the rapid modernization of Xi’an, the Muslim Quarter has maintained its traditional atmosphere, making it one of the best places to experience the city’s multicultural heritage.

Beiyuanmen Muslim Street: A Paradise for Xi’an Food Lovers
The most popular area of the Muslim Quarter is Beiyuanmen Muslim Street (北院门), located just north of the Drum Tower in downtown Xi’an.
Stretching approximately 500 meters from south to north, the street can be reached through the traditional archway beneath the Drum Tower. The street is paved with dark stone and lined with green trees, creating a pleasant atmosphere, especially during summer.
The buildings on both sides feature traditional architectural styles influenced by the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. Today, many historic buildings have been transformed into restaurants, food stalls, and souvenir shops, while still preserving the traditional character of the neighborhood.
The street is famous for its authentic Xi’an Muslim cuisine, including:
* Yangrou Paomo (lamb soup with bread pieces)
* Roujiamo (Chinese-style meat burger)
* Biangbiang noodles
* Lamb kebabs
* Various traditional pastries and snacks
For food lovers, Beiyuanmen Muslim Street is one of the best places to experience the flavors of Shaanxi cuisine.

Great Mosque of Xi’an: A Unique Cultural Landmark
The Great Mosque of Xi’an is the most important historical attraction in the Muslim Quarter.
Unlike traditional Middle Eastern mosques, the Great Mosque combines Islamic religious traditions with classical Chinese architectural styles. Visitors can admire its peaceful courtyards, ancient stone inscriptions, traditional gardens, and beautifully designed prayer halls.
The mosque reflects the cultural exchange between China and the Islamic world along the Silk Road and represents the harmonious integration of different civilizations.

A Walk Through Traditional Xi’an Life
Walking through the narrow streets of the Muslim Quarter offers visitors a glimpse into everyday life in old Xi’an.
Along the street, travelers can see Muslim shopkeepers wearing traditional white caps, local residents chatting together, and elderly people relaxing outside their shops while children play nearby.
The stores sell a wide range of products, including:
* Traditional Muslim snacks
* Handmade local foods
* Shaanxi specialties
* Traditional crafts
* Cultural souvenirs
The combination of historic streets, traditional architecture, delicious food, and friendly local communities makes the Muslim Quarter one of the most memorable experiences in Xi’an.

Why Visit Xi’an Muslim Quarter?
The Muslim Quarter is more than just a food street. It is a living cultural heritage area that reflects Xi’an’s role as an ancient Silk Road city and a meeting point of different cultures.
For travelers visiting Xi’an, a walk through the Muslim Quarter offers the perfect opportunity to taste authentic local cuisine, explore Islamic heritage, experience traditional lifestyles, and discover the multicultural spirit of China’s ancient capital.
