Hukou Waterfall
Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River ChinaLocated on the border between Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province, approximately 400 kilometers from Xi’an, Hukou Waterfall is one of China’s most spectacular natural wonders and the second-largest waterfall in China.
Created by the mighty Yellow River, the second-longest river in China, Hukou Waterfall is famous for its powerful water flow, dramatic landscape, and the unique phenomenon known as “Smoke from the River.” The waterfall is an iconic symbol of the Yellow River’s strength and has attracted visitors from around the world for generations.

Formation of Hukou Waterfall
The Yellow River begins its journey from Qinghai Province and flows eastward before reaching the border region between Shanxi and Shaanxi. Here, the river passes through a narrow canyon surrounded by mountains.
At this point, the river width suddenly narrows from approximately 300 meters to only 50 meters, forcing the calm river water into a powerful torrent. The enormous volume of water crashes down onto the rocks, creating a spectacular waterfall measuring about:
* Height: 15 meters
* Width: 20 meters
The shape of the waterfall resembles water pouring from the mouth of a giant teapot, which is why it is called “Hukou”, meaning “the mouth of a teapot.”
The rushing water creates huge clouds of mist, while the color of the river changes dramatically from yellow to gray and blue depending on the sunlight and weather conditions. Local people have long described this breathtaking scene as “smoke rising from the Yellow River.”

The Famous “Smoke from the River” Phenomenon
When the powerful current falls into the deep pool below, it creates massive water spray that rises like thick smoke and can be seen from a great distance.
This unique natural spectacle is especially impressive during spring and autumn, when the water volume is ideal for viewing. During these seasons, visitors can clearly appreciate the dramatic combination of rushing water, mist, cliffs, and the golden color of the Yellow River.

Powerful Yellow River waterfall on Shanxi Shaanxi borderBest Seasons to Visit Hukou Waterfall
Hukou Waterfall changes its appearance throughout the year, offering different experiences in each season.

Spring and Autumn: Best Viewing Period
Spring and autumn are considered the best times to visit. The river has strong water flow, and the mist created by the waterfall forms the famous “smoke rising from the water” scene.

Summer
During summer, the waterfall may appear less dramatic due to changes in water conditions, but the surrounding landscape remains attractive.

Winter: Ice Waterfall Landscape
In winter, Hukou Waterfall transforms into a completely different world. The rushing Yellow River freezes into spectacular ice formations, creating unusual shapes and a peaceful white landscape.
The contrast between the frozen ice, snow-covered surroundings, and the powerful river creates a unique winter scene unlike the waterfall’s usual majestic appearance.

Historical Story: Ships Moving Ahead on Land
In ancient times, the Hukou section of the Yellow River was extremely dangerous for navigation. The narrow river channel, strong currents, and rocks made it impossible for boats to pass safely.
When ships reached this area, boatmen had to pull their vessels onto the riverbank and drag them over land to continue their journey. This difficult process became known as “ships moving ahead on land.”
With the development of modern transportation, this traditional scene has disappeared, but it remains an important part of the history and culture of the Yellow River.

Visiting Hukou Waterfall
Hukou Waterfall offers visitors an unforgettable experience of China’s natural power and cultural heritage. Standing beside the roaring Yellow River, watching the golden water plunge through the narrow canyon, travelers can truly appreciate why the waterfall has been celebrated for centuries.
For visitors traveling from Xi’an or exploring the cultural landscapes of Shanxi and Shaanxi, Hukou Waterfall is a remarkable destination combining natural beauty, geological wonder, and the legendary spirit of the Yellow River.
