Wencheng Princess Monastery
Wencheng Princess Monastery in Qinghai
Wencheng Princess Monastery (Princess Wen Cheng Temple) is one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist sites in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. Located in Binang Valley, about 20 kilometers outside Jiegu (Jyekundo) Town, the monastery is a sacred cultural landmark connecting Tibetan Buddhism, Chinese history, and the legendary journey of Princess Wencheng to Tibet.
With a history of more than 1,300 years, Wencheng Princess Monastery is regarded as the origin of Buddhism in East Kham and is believed to be the first Buddhist temple and Buddhist statue established in the Yushu region.

A Historic Temple Connected with Princess Wencheng
The history of Wencheng Princess Monastery is closely associated with Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty.
In 641 AD, Princess Wencheng traveled from Chang’an (present-day Xi’an) to Tibet after marrying King Songtsen Gampo, the great ruler who helped spread Buddhism throughout Tibet.
According to local legend, Princess Wencheng stopped and rested in the Yushu area during her journey to Tibet. The place where she stayed later became the location of the present-day Wencheng Princess Monastery.
In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Princess Wencheng is regarded as an incarnation of White Tara, a symbol of compassion, wisdom, and protection.
Because of its exceptional historical and cultural value, the Chinese government officially listed Wencheng Princess Monastery as a protected heritage building on December 30, 1957.

The Sacred Maha Vairochana Buddha Statue
One of the greatest treasures of Wencheng Princess Monastery is the Maha Vairochana Buddha Statue.
According to Tibetan Buddhist belief, this statue carries blessings equivalent to the famous Shakyamuni Buddha statue at Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, one of the most sacred Buddhist images in Tibet.
The statue has made the monastery an important pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Buddhists from Yushu, Qinghai, Tibet, and surrounding regions.
For local believers, visiting Wencheng Princess Monastery is considered an essential spiritual journey. There is a traditional saying:
“You have not truly visited Yushu until you have visited Wencheng Princess Monastery.”

Wencheng Princess Monastery in Qinghai ProvinceReligious Heritage of East Kham
Wencheng Princess Monastery has played an important role in the development of Tibetan Buddhism in the East Kham region.
The monastery was managed by Thrangu Monastery from the Song and Yuan dynasties and has been renovated and rebuilt several times throughout history.
Today, it remains an active Buddhist center where monks conduct regular religious ceremonies.
Important Buddhist activities are held during:
* Losar (Tibetan New Year)
* Summer religious festivals
* Autumn prayer ceremonies
These traditional rituals continue to preserve the spiritual heritage of Yushu Tibetan culture.

Architecture and Cultural Features
The monastery is surrounded by the magnificent landscapes of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, combining natural beauty with Tibetan religious architecture.
Visitors can explore:
* The sacred Buddha hall
* Ancient Buddhist statues
* Tibetan murals
* Monk retreat houses
* Traditional prayer areas
The individual retreat huts and monastery buildings were rebuilt under the supervision of Treleg Kyagon Rinpoche before the Cultural Revolution.
Treleg Kyagon Rinpoche was recognized by the Chinese government as one of the “Three Kyagons” and is honored within the monastery through a portrait displayed on the left side of the temple entrance.

Visiting Wencheng Princess Monastery in Yushu
Wencheng Princess Monastery offers travelers a unique opportunity to experience the deep spiritual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism and the historical connection between China and Tibet.
Unlike large tourist attractions, the monastery maintains a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can observe:
* Tibetan Buddhist prayers
* Local pilgrimage traditions
* Ancient religious art
* Plateau monastery life
For travelers exploring Yushu, Qinghai, and the Tibetan cultural regions of western China, Wencheng Princess Monastery is one of the most meaningful cultural destinations.

Why Visit Wencheng Princess Monastery?
Wencheng Princess Monastery is:
* One of the oldest Buddhist temples in Yushu
* A symbol of Princess Wencheng’s historic journey
* An important pilgrimage site in East Kham
* Home to a highly revered Maha Vairochana Buddha statue
* A place to experience authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture
A visit here provides a deeper understanding of the religious history, traditions, and spiritual life of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
