Lingering Garden
Lingering Garden UNESCO classical garden in Suzhou ChinaLingering Garden is one of the most famous attractions in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, and one of China’s Four Great Classical Gardens. As part of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the garden is celebrated for its exceptional landscape design, elegant architecture, and perfect harmony between nature and art.
Covering approximately 23,300 square meters, Lingering Garden is renowned for its beautifully designed courtyards, magnificent Taihu stone rockeries, peaceful ponds, ancient trees, and graceful pavilions.
Through its ingenious layout, the garden creates a constantly changing series of scenic views, representing one of the finest achievements of traditional Chinese garden design and Jiangnan culture.

A Masterpiece of Jiangnan Scholar Garden Design
Lingering Garden was originally built in 1593 during the Ming Dynasty as a private garden for scholar-official Xu Taishi.
During the Qing Dynasty, the garden was restored and expanded by Liu Shu, whose family name later inspired the garden’s current name.
Unlike large imperial gardens, Lingering Garden was designed as a peaceful retreat for scholars. Its landscape emphasizes harmony between architecture, water, plants, and stones, reflecting the refined aesthetic values of Jiangnan culture.
Every courtyard, pathway, pavilion, and viewing point has been carefully arranged to create a sense of balance, depth, and artistic harmony.

Highlights of Lingering Garden

Magnificent Taihu Stone Rockeries
One of the most famous features of Lingering Garden is its exquisite Taihu stone rockeries.
These uniquely shaped limestone formations are carefully arranged to resemble natural mountains and landscapes. Their artistic composition reflects the traditional Chinese concept of creating miniature natural scenery within a garden.
The rockeries are considered among the finest examples of classical Chinese garden landscaping.

Central Pond
The peaceful Central Pond forms the heart of Lingering Garden.
Surrounded by elegant pavilions, covered corridors, and ornamental bridges, the pond creates beautiful reflections and changing views throughout the seasons.
The relationship between water, architecture, and vegetation perfectly demonstrates the philosophy of traditional Chinese garden design.

Covered Corridors
The network of covered corridors is one of Lingering Garden’s most distinctive features.
These corridors connect different sections of the garden while creating carefully framed views of ponds, pavilions, flowers, and rockeries.
With every turn revealing a new scene, the corridor design showcases the sophisticated spatial planning that makes Lingering Garden unique.

Classical Architecture
Lingering Garden contains many beautifully preserved halls, pavilions, studies, and reception rooms.
Decorated with traditional wood carvings, lattice windows, calligraphy, and elegant furnishings, these buildings reflect the refined lifestyle and artistic tastes of ancient Chinese scholars.

Things to Do at Lingering Garden
Visitors to Lingering Garden can enjoy a variety of cultural experiences:
