Ancient Rural Complex
xidi village of anhui province
Often praised as “a world beyond the ordinary world,” Xidi and Hongcun Villages represent a perfect harmony between natural landscapes and traditional Chinese culture. Located in Yi County, Anhui Province, near Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), these two ancient villages are the most outstanding examples of the rural settlements of southern Anhui.
With their well-preserved architecture, peaceful countryside scenery, and rich cultural heritage, Xidi and Hongcun provide visitors with a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of traditional Chinese village life.

Xidi Village – A Classic Example of Huizhou Architecture
Xidi Village consists of more than 300 traditional residential buildings, most of which were built during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties.
Surrounded by picturesque hills and towering ancient trees, Xidi is famous for the perfect harmony between architecture and nature. The village features traditional black-and-white houses, narrow stone lanes, elegant courtyards, and beautifully decorated buildings that preserve the artistic style of ancient Huizhou culture.
The interiors of many residences contain valuable collections of:
* Traditional calligraphy
* Ancient paintings
* Handicrafts
* Historical decorations
Potted plants, small gardens, ponds, and flower arrangements add vitality to the village, creating a peaceful environment where man-made culture and natural landscapes exist together in balance.

Yi country of AnhuiHongcun Village – A Traditional Chinese Village Designed Like an Ox
Hongcun Village is best known for its unique overall design inspired by the shape of an ox. This remarkable village layout reflects the wisdom of ancient Chinese planning and combines architecture with a carefully designed water system.
The main street connects:
* Nanhu Lake (South Lake) in the south
* Moon Pond (Yuezhao) in the north
One of the most beautiful scenes in Hongcun is Nanhu Lake, where the ancient Nanhu Academy is reflected in the calm water, surrounded by old trees and elegant traditional buildings.
The peaceful combination of lakes, architecture, and natural scenery has made Hongcun one of the most photographed ancient villages in China.

Cultural Heritage of Yi County – The Home of Huizhou Civilization
Located southwest of Mount Huangshan, Yi County has a history dating back more than 2,000 years to the Qin Dynasty.
Throughout its long history, Yi County has preserved its natural beauty and cultural traditions. Because of its peaceful environment and secluded landscapes, it was once compared to “Taohuayuan” (Peach Blossom Spring), a legendary paradise described in Chinese literature.
The famous Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai (Li Po) also wrote poetry praising the beauty of this region.
The local people, originally descendants of the ancient State of Yue, have long been known for their independence, respect for education, and dedication to preserving traditions.
Thanks to centuries of cultural development and careful preservation, approximately 3,000 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties remain intact in Yi County. Even the smallest architectural details reflect the craftsmanship and civilization of traditional China.

Hui-Style Architecture – The Beauty of Traditional Southern Anhui Homes
Traditional residences in southern Anhui represent the unique Hui-style architectural tradition, which emphasizes balance, symmetry, and harmony between people and nature.
A typical Huizhou residence is usually divided into three main sections. Through clever spatial design, the buildings appear both orderly and flexible.
Common architectural features include:
* Symmetrical room layouts
* Central main halls with side rooms
* Indoor skylights for natural lighting and ventilation
* Courtyards designed for family activities
The roofs are often shaped like half-open books with raised beams or gabled structures. Exterior walls feature black tiles arranged in elegant patterns, while small decorative windows add artistic beauty.
The main entrances are usually framed with local stone and decorated with exquisite brick and stone carvings, reflecting the wealth and artistic achievements of Huizhou families.

Traditional Landscape Gardens – Small Spaces with Great Beauty
The family gardens of Xidi and Hongcun are usually located in front of, beside, or behind residential buildings.
Although these gardens are often small in size, they demonstrate remarkable creativity and a strong poetic atmosphere. Traditional garden design uses:
* Decorative windows
* Stone doors
* Screens
* Flowers and plants
* Carefully arranged spaces
These elements divide and transform the landscape, creating a feeling of depth, elegance, and harmony.
The gardens reflect the traditional Chinese philosophy of creating beauty through balance between architecture and nature.

Why Visit Xidi and Hongcun Villages?
Xidi and Hongcun are among the finest examples of traditional Chinese villages and Huizhou culture. Their ancient residences, peaceful waterways, elegant gardens, and beautiful mountain surroundings provide visitors with an authentic experience of China’s historical countryside.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these villages are ideal destinations for travelers interested in:
* Ancient Chinese architecture
* Traditional village life
* Huizhou culture
* Ming and Qing history
* Huangshan cultural tours
For visitors exploring Mount Huangshan and Anhui Province, Xidi and Hongcun offer an unforgettable journey into the artistic and cultural heritage of ancient China.
