D1: Arrival in Shanghai – The Bund – Nanjing Road
Upon arrival in Shanghai, your private guide and driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the city center. After settling in, begin your Shanghai sightseeing with a visit to The Bund, Shanghai’s iconic waterfront promenade along the Huangpu River.
Stroll along the historic waterfront and admire the impressive skyline on both sides of the river. From The Bund, you can enjoy views of Shanghai’s modern landmarks, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and other skyscrapers in Pudong. With its combination of historic European-style architecture and spectacular city views, The Bund is one of the essential stops on any Shanghai tour.
Next, explore Nanjing Road, one of Shanghai’s most famous commercial streets. The pedestrian section stretches for about 1.2 kilometers and is lined with department stores, international brands, restaurants, cafés, and traditional shops. Often known as “China’s No. 1 Commercial Street,” Nanjing Road is an excellent place to experience Shanghai’s lively urban atmosphere.
In the evening, the street becomes particularly atmospheric as the shops and buildings illuminate the city center. Enjoy some free time for shopping, dining, or simply taking a leisurely walk before returning to your hotel.
D2: Shanghai – Suzhou – Master of the Nets Garden – Tiger Hill – Humble Administrator’s Garden – Pan Gate
After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel in Shanghai and drive to Suzhou, one of China’s most famous historic cities and a renowned center of classical garden art.
Your first stop is the Master of the Nets Garden (Wangshi Garden), a celebrated example of a classical Suzhou garden. Although relatively compact, the garden makes clever use of ponds, rockeries, pavilions, courtyards, and carefully framed views to create a sense of spaciousness. Its elegant design reflects the refined aesthetics of traditional Jiangnan garden architecture.
Continue to Tiger Hill, a historic scenic area with more than 2,500 years of history. The hill is best known for the Yunyan Pagoda, often called the “Leaning Pagoda of Tiger Hill,” and Sword Pond (Jianchi). At around 36 meters high, Tiger Hill combines natural scenery, historic architecture, and local legends, making it one of Suzhou’s most popular attractions.
Next, visit the Humble Administrator’s Garden (Zhuozheng Garden), one of the four most famous classical gardens in China and a masterpiece of traditional Chinese private garden design. Covering approximately 52,000 square meters, the garden is divided into eastern, central, and western sections. The central section is particularly renowned for its beautiful ponds, pavilions, bridges, and carefully arranged landscapes that capture the characteristic charm of the Jiangnan water-region.
In the afternoon, visit Pan Gate (Panmen Gate), a historic landmark in the ancient city of Suzhou. Built during the Spring and Autumn Period, Pan Gate is famous for its combination of land and water gates, reflecting the defensive design of ancient Suzhou. The surrounding area also contains historic buildings and monuments that offer insight into the city’s long history.
After sightseeing, check in to your hotel in Suzhou and enjoy a relaxing evening.
D3: Zhouzhuang Water Town – Shanghai
Today, travel to Zhouzhuang Water Town, one of the most famous ancient water towns in the Jiangnan region. Known for its traditional whitewashed houses, stone bridges, narrow lanes, canals, and historic residences, Zhouzhuang offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of southern China.
Take a leisurely walk through the old town and explore its historic streets and waterways. You can also experience a traditional Wupeng boat ride, a distinctive type of covered wooden boat commonly associated with the water towns of Jiangnan. Cruising along the narrow canals provides a relaxing way to appreciate the town’s traditional architecture and riverside scenery.
After your visit to Zhouzhuang, your guide and driver will drive you back to Shanghai. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
D4: Oriental Pearl Tower – Shanghai Museum
After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel at around 7:00–7:30 a.m. and begin today’s Shanghai sightseeing.
First, visit the Oriental Pearl Tower, one of Shanghai’s most recognizable landmarks. Located beside the Huangpu River in Pudong, the tower rises approximately 468 meters and offers panoramic views of Shanghai from its observation platforms.
Take the elevator to one of the viewing levels and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the Huangpu River, The Bund, and the surrounding city skyline. The tower provides an excellent opportunity to appreciate the contrast between historic Puxi and modern Pudong.
In the afternoon, visit the Shanghai Museum, one of China’s leading museums of ancient Chinese art and cultural heritage. Its collections cover a wide range of subjects, including Chinese bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, jade, furniture, and other traditional works of art.
Spend time exploring the museum’s galleries and learning about China’s rich artistic and cultural history. After the visit, return to your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening.
D5: Jade Buddha Temple – Shanghai Departure
On your final day, visit the Jade Buddha Temple, one of Shanghai’s best-known Buddhist temples. Located in Putuo District, the temple is famous for its jade Buddha statues and peaceful atmosphere despite being situated within the busy city.
Explore the temple’s traditional halls and courtyards and learn about its Buddhist heritage. The temple provides a quieter and more spiritual contrast to Shanghai’s modern skyline and bustling commercial districts.
After the visit, your guide and driver will transfer you to the airport for your onward journey, marking the end of your 5-day Shanghai and Suzhou tour.
