The Dong People developed from a branch of ancient 100 Yue ethnic minorities, mainly distributed in South and East Guizhou province.

Singing has a high position in the social life of the Dong people. The elderly teach songs, and the young sing and learn songs. From generation to generation, the singers pass song orally, become a social practice. Dong dag, pipa and road blocking songs are all excellent representatives of Dong music.
There are traditional singing classes and singing groups among the Dong nationality. On festivals , they gain reputation by singing "big songs". When the singing class sings, the leading singer is combined with the public chorus to distinguish the high and low voices. Its complete multi-voice structure is the most perfect folk chorus found in China, and it is known as the "sound of heaven".
There are no less than 100 festivals in the Dong nationality. There are 84 festivals in the Qiandongnan Dong area alone in a year. There are common festivals of the whole nation, as well as festivals for only one village, one village and one family name.
