Your private tour guide will meet you at your hotel in Xi’an in the morning, and your Xi’an city tour begins with a visit to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum.
Located about 40 km northeast of downtown Xi’an, the Terracotta Warriors were created to accompany Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China, in the afterlife. Thousands of life-size terracotta warriors, horses, chariots and other figures have been unearthed from the burial pits. During your visit, you will explore the museum halls and excavation pits to see the remarkable army at close range and learn about the history of the Qin Dynasty and the archaeological discoveries made here.
You will also have an opportunity to visit a local terracotta warrior workshop, where you can learn about the traditional techniques used to make these famous clay figures and try your hand at making a small terracotta warrior yourself.
After lunch, drive back to Xi’an city center and continue your Xi’an sightseeing tour with the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, located within the Da Ci’en Temple complex. Built during the Tang Dynasty, the pagoda is closely associated with Xuanzang, the renowned Buddhist monk who traveled to India and brought Buddhist scriptures back to China. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is one of Xi’an’s most recognizable landmarks and an important symbol of the city’s history as a major center along the ancient Silk Road.
Next, visit the impressive Xi’an City Wall, one of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China. The existing wall dates mainly from the Ming Dynasty and surrounds the historic city center. Walk along the massive fortifications and explore the four principal gates: Changle Gate (East Gate), Yongning Gate (South Gate), Anding Gate (West Gate), and Anyuan Gate (North Gate). From the wall, you can enjoy a different perspective of both historic and modern Xi’an.
Your final stop is the Forest of Steles Museum, one of the most important collections of ancient stone inscriptions in China. The museum houses thousands of stone tablets and inscriptions dating from the Han Dynasty through the Qing Dynasty. Beyond their historical value, these steles are particularly important for the study of traditional Chinese calligraphy, literature and stone carving.
