Pingyao is a Chinese city and county in central Shanxi province, China. It lies about 715 km from Beijing and 80 km from the provincial capital, Taiyuan.During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was a financial center of China. It is now renowned for its well-preserved ancient city wall, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pingyao retains its city layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, conforming to a typical bagua pattern. More than 300 sites in or near the city have ancient ruins. The streets and storefronts still largely retain their historical appearance .Pingyao was the financial center of China in the late Qing Dynasty. During those times, there were as many as 20 financial institutions within the city, comprising more than half of total in the whole country. Your private guide will meet you at your hotel or at the airport or train station in Taiyuan. Alternatively, you can be picked up at Pingyao Railway Station if you are arriving in Pingyao by train. Then begin your private Pingyao Ancient City tour.
Start with a walk along the Ancient City Wall of Pingyao, one of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China. The historic city of Pingyao is renowned for its remarkably well-preserved layout, traditional architecture, and rich merchant heritage. The city wall stretches for approximately 6.4 kilometers and features watchtowers, battlements, and gates that offer a fascinating glimpse into the city’s military and defensive history.
Next, visit the Rishengchang Exchange Shop, widely regarded as one of the earliest draft banks in China. Founded during the Qing Dynasty, Rishengchang pioneered a system for transferring money between different parts of China and played an important role in the development of China’s early financial and commercial networks. The site provides an interesting introduction to the history of Shanxi merchants and traditional Chinese finance.
Continue to Mingqing Street (Ming and Qing Street), also known as South Street or Nanda Jie. About 440 meters long, this historic street was once the commercial heart of Pingyao Ancient City. Today, its traditional storefronts, old residences, local shops, restaurants, and handicraft stores make it a lively place to experience the atmosphere of an old Chinese commercial town.
After lunch, visit the Armed Escort Company Museum, where you can learn about the traditional armed escort services used by Shanxi merchants. Before modern banking and transportation systems, merchants often relied on professional escort companies to protect valuable goods and money while traveling between cities. The museum offers an insight into the risks faced by merchants and the security networks that supported long-distance trade.
Finally, visit the County Government Office, a well-preserved historic government complex that served as the administrative center and courthouse of Pingyao. Explore its courtyards, offices, prison facilities, and ceremonial areas to learn more about how local government and justice were administered in imperial China.
After the tour, your guide and driver will transfer you to your hotel, Taiyuan Airport, Taiyuan Railway Station, or Pingyao Railway Station according to your onward travel arrangements.
