Day 1: Arrival in Pingyao | Shuanglin Temple – Pingyao Ancient City
Arrive in Pingyao around noon by high-speed train from Xi’an, Mount Wutai, or Taiyuan. Your local guide will meet you at Pingyao Railway Station and accompany you to Shuanglin Temple, located just outside the ancient city.
Shuanglin Temple is part of the Ancient City of Pingyao UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned for its extraordinary collection of ancient painted clay sculptures. More than 2,000 colorful sculptures from different periods, particularly the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, are preserved in the temple’s halls.
As you explore the temple, admire the remarkably expressive figures of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, guardians, and other religious figures. Their vivid colors, detailed facial expressions, and intricate craftsmanship provide an excellent introduction to the development of traditional Chinese Buddhist sculpture and temple art.
In the afternoon, continue to Pingyao Ancient City, one of China’s best-preserved historic walled cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enter through the ancient city gates and stroll along its narrow stone-paved streets, lined with traditional courtyard residences, historic government offices, old banks, shops, and other well-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings.
Pingyao once flourished as an important commercial and financial center, particularly through the development of Shanxi’s famous merchant and banking networks. As you explore the old streets, you will discover how merchants and local residents lived and conducted business in this historic town.
In the evening, stay overnight in a traditional courtyard guesthouse inside Pingyao Ancient City. This unique accommodation allows you to experience the atmosphere of the historic town after the busy daytime hours and enjoy the traditional architectural style of Shanxi.
Day 2: Pingyao Ancient City – Departure (B, Breakfast)
After breakfast, continue exploring Pingyao Ancient City at a leisurely pace. Wander through additional historic streets and traditional neighborhoods, browse local shops, and visit cultural landmarks that reveal the city’s rich history.
You may also explore more of Pingyao’s historic merchant heritage, including traditional courtyard residences and former financial institutions, while learning about the important role the city played in the development of China’s early banking and commercial networks.
At the appointed time, your guide will accompany you to Pingyao Railway Station for your high-speed train to your next destination.
