Day 1: Arrival in Pingyao | Qiao Family Compound – Pingyao Ancient City
Arrive in Pingyao around noon by high-speed train from Xi’an, Mount Wutai, or Taiyuan. Your local guide will meet you at Pingyao Railway Station and accompany you to the renowned Qiao Family Compound, one of the finest examples of traditional Shanxi courtyard architecture.
Built during the Qing Dynasty, the impressive residence was the home of the prosperous Qiao merchant family. The complex consists of a series of interconnected courtyards featuring ornate wood carvings, delicate brick and stone decorations, traditional gateways, and beautifully preserved residential buildings.
As you explore the compound, you will gain an insight into the lifestyle, architecture, and merchant culture of Shanxi during the Qing Dynasty. The Qiao Family Compound also became internationally known after serving as one of the filming locations for Zhang Yimou’s acclaimed movie Raise the Red Lantern.
After the visit, drive back to Pingyao Ancient City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China’s best-preserved historic walled cities. Enter through its ancient gates and take a leisurely walk along the stone-paved streets, where well-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings, traditional residences, shops, and historic businesses line the streets.
Pingyao was once an important financial and commercial center in Shanxi, and its historic streets preserve the atmosphere of a prosperous merchant town from centuries ago. Take time to explore the old neighborhoods and experience the unique character of this remarkable ancient city.
In the evening, stay overnight in a traditional courtyard guesthouse within Pingyao Ancient City. Staying inside the historic city allows you to experience the quiet atmosphere of the old town after the daytime crowds have left.
Day 2: Pingyao Ancient City – Departure (B, Breakfast)
After breakfast, continue exploring Pingyao Ancient City at a leisurely pace. Walk along the ancient city walls and visit some of the city’s most important historic sites, including traditional courtyard residences, old shops, former banks, and historic Rishengchang Exchange House, widely recognized as an important part of the history of China’s early banking and remittance businesses.
As you wander through the narrow streets, you will discover traditional architecture and everyday details that reveal how merchants, craftsmen, and local residents lived and worked in Pingyao centuries ago.
In the afternoon, your guide will accompany you to Pingyao Railway Station for your high-speed train to your next destination.
