Xinjiang Interantional Bazaar

The Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar is located in the Erdaoqiao Commercial District at the southern end of Tianshan District, Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The word “Bazaar” comes from the Uyghur language, meaning market, and has long been a symbol of trade, cultural exchange, and the prosperity of the ancient Silk Road.
As one of Urumqi’s most iconic landmarks, the Grand Bazaar combines traditional Islamic architecture, Uyghur culture, shopping, dining, and entertainment, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Xinjiang. Its distinctive domes, arches, and minarets recreate the atmosphere of the historic Silk Road while showcasing the unique cultural heritage of China’s western frontier.

The World’s Largest Bazaar
Officially opened on June 26, 2003, the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar is widely recognized as the largest bazaar of its kind in the world. Designed in a blend of traditional Islamic architecture and modern commercial facilities, the complex features magnificent blue and silver domes, elegant archways, and richly decorated facades that reflect the architectural traditions of Central Asia and the Middle East.
Often referred to as the “Window of Xinjiang,” “Window of Central Asia,” and “Window to the Silk Road,” the Grand Bazaar offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the region’s multicultural heritage. Despite its modern infrastructure, many local merchants continue to preserve traditional trading customs, creating a vibrant marketplace filled with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Xinjiang.

Shopping at the Xinjiang Grand Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar is one of the best places to shop for authentic Xinjiang souvenirs, traditional handicrafts, and regional specialties. Hundreds of shops and market stalls offer a wide variety of locally made products, including:
* Traditional Uyghur clothing and embroidered hats
* Handmade jewelry and ethnic accessories
* Traditional Xinjiang knives and decorative crafts
* Musical instruments such as the Rawap and Dutar
* Handwoven carpets, tapestries, and textiles
* Turkish-style rugs and imported handicrafts
* Dried fruits, nuts, and Xinjiang’s famous melons
* Herbal medicines and local specialties, including snow lotus, safflower, cordyceps, deer antler, angelica, and reishi mushrooms
* Decorative copperware and traditional home décor
With its extensive selection of products, reasonable prices, and lively atmosphere, the Grand Bazaar is an ideal place to purchase memorable gifts and experience the rich cultural traditions of Xinjiang.

Food and Cultural Experiences
Beyond shopping, the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar is also a vibrant destination for experiencing the region’s diverse cuisine and ethnic culture. Visitors can sample authentic Xinjiang dishes such as lamb kebabs, hand-pulled noodles, pilaf (polo), roasted naan bread, yogurt, and dried fruits, while enjoying traditional Uyghur music and dance performances that are frequently held throughout the market.
The combination of colorful architecture, bustling market streets, local food, and cultural performances makes the Grand Bazaar one of the best places to experience the spirit of the ancient Silk Road.

Why Visit the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar?
For travelers with limited time in Urumqi, the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar offers the perfect introduction to the region’s history, culture, and traditions. Whether you’re interested in Silk Road history, Uyghur culture, local cuisine, or shopping for authentic handicrafts, the Grand Bazaar provides an unforgettable cultural experience and remains one of the must-visit attractions in Xinjiang.
