Tuyugou Canyon in Turpan
Located about 15 kilometers from the ancient ruins of Gaochang, Tuyugou Canyon is an 8-kilometer-long valley cutting through the Flaming Mountains. This peaceful canyon is a rare combination of spectacular desert scenery, traditional Uyghur villages, Islamic heritage, and ancient archaeological sites.

About 8 kilometers from Tuyugou Canyon lies the famous Yanghai Tombs, one of the most significant archaeological sites near Turpan.
The site became internationally known after the discovery of a well-preserved Caucasian mummy during excavations in 2008. The remains were identified as belonging to a person who lived approximately 2,700 years ago, providing valuable information about the ancient inhabitants, migration patterns, and cultural exchanges in the Turpan Basin.
Together with its ancient villages, religious sites, and archaeological treasures, Tuyugou Canyon offers travelers a deeper understanding of Xinjiang’s multicultural history and the rich heritage of the ancient Silk Road.
