Princess Castle Tash Kurghan
Princess Castle ancient fortress in Taxkorgan Xinjiang ChinaLocated in Taxkorgan Stone Fortress, the Princess Castle (also known as Taxkorgan Stone Castle) is one of the most important historical sites along the ancient Silk Road. Standing on the Pamir Plateau, this ancient fortress reflects the region’s long history as a crossroads connecting China, Central Asia, and South Asia.
For thousands of years, Taxkorgan served as a strategic meeting point for major caravan routes. Ancient roads from Kashgar in the north, Yarkand and Karghalik in the east, Badakhshan and Wakhan in the west, and Chitral and Hunza in present-day Pakistan all converged here.

History of Taxkorgan and the Silk Road
Around 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD), Taxkorgan was an important center of the ancient Kingdom of Puli and was recorded in historical documents including the Book of Han (Hanshu) and the Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu).
Over later centuries, the area was known by different names, including Varshadeh and Qiepantuo. Due to its strategic location, Taxkorgan became an important political and commercial center controlling routes through the Pamir Mountains.
The famous Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang passed through this region around 649 AD while traveling from Badakhshan to Khotan. His descriptions of Qiepantuo recorded a city built on a large rocky mountain area beside a river, matching the landscape around present-day Taxkorgan.

Princess Castle and Local Legends
Located at the northeastern edge of Taxkorgan town, the Princess Castle dates back mainly to the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368). Built on a rocky hill, the fortress overlooks the surrounding valleys and mountain landscapes.
The castle is associated with many fascinating local legends. One story tells of a Han Dynasty princess who traveled westward to marry a Persian king. During political unrest, she was placed on a high rock for protection. According to the legend, she later gave birth to a powerful ruler, establishing a royal lineage in the region.
Different versions of the story exist among local communities. Some legends connect the princess with the Persian king Naushirvan, adding another layer of mystery to this ancient fortress.

Archaeological and Cultural Significance
The ruins of Princess Castle reveal Taxkorgan’s importance as a military, political, and cultural center throughout history. Nearby archaeological remains, including traces of ancient settlements and a former Zoroastrian temple, demonstrate the diverse religions and cultures that once flourished along the Silk Road.
The fortress also reflects the historical role of the Sarikol Kingdom, which controlled important routes through the Pamir Mountains and maintained connections between Central Asia and the oases of southern Xinjiang.
Standing among snow-covered mountains and vast highland landscapes, Princess Castle offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the history of Silk Road exchanges and the multicultural heritage of western Xinjiang.

Travel Experience
A visit to Princess Castle can be combined with other attractions in Taxkorgan, including:
* Stone City of Taxkorgan
* Pamir Plateau landscapes
* Karakul Lake
* Muztagh Ata Mountain views
* Tajik ethnic villages
With its ancient ruins, Silk Road history, and dramatic Pamir Mountain backdrop, Princess Castle is one of the most memorable historical attractions on the journey from Kashgar to the Pamir region.
