Bolanggu Wave Danxia Valley in Jingbian
Bolanggu Wave Valley in Shaanxi ProvinceBolanggu Wave Valley, also known as Wave Valley, is one of China’s most extraordinary Danxia landform destinations. Located about 22 kilometers southeast of Jingbian County in Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, this remarkable geological wonder is famous for its flowing sandstone formations, colorful rock layers, and dramatic desert scenery.
Often compared to famous wave-shaped sandstone landscapes around the world, Bolanggu Wave Valley features naturally sculpted rock formations that resemble frozen ocean waves. The scenic area is a paradise for photographers, nature lovers, hikers, artists, and geology enthusiasts.

A Unique Danxia Landscape
Bolanggu Wave Valley is renowned for its exceptionally diverse Danxia landforms, created over millions of years through the erosion of red sandstone by wind and water.
The scenic area showcases three distinctive geological landscapes:
* Earth-Core Danxia – spectacular underground-style red sandstone formations carved beneath the surface.
* Flame Danxia – vibrant red cliffs and wave-like ridges glowing under sunlight.
* Water Danxia – colorful sandstone reflected in tranquil lakes and pools.
The coexistence of these three different Danxia landscapes within one scenic area is exceptionally rare in China, making Bolanggu Wave Valley a unique destination for geological exploration and sightseeing.

A Paradise for Photography and Outdoor Exploration
The smooth sandstone formations create endless patterns of curves, stripes, and ripples that change color throughout the day as the sunlight shifts.
Whether visiting at sunrise or sunset, photographers can capture breathtaking views of glowing red rocks, dramatic textures, and sweeping desert landscapes. The area’s unique scenery also makes it a popular destination for hiking, sketching, educational field trips, and geological research.

Nearby Attractions
Visitors to Bolanggu Wave Valley can easily combine their trip with several important historical attractions in northern Shaanxi.

Tongwancheng Ancient City
Located on the edge of the Mu Us Desert, Tongwancheng Ancient City was the capital of the Daxia Kingdom, established by the Xiongnu leader Helian Bobo during the early 5th century.
Over time, the city was gradually buried by shifting desert sands, leaving behind one of China’s most remarkable archaeological sites. Today, Tongwancheng is recognized as the only surviving capital city built by the Xiongnu (Hun) people, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into China’s frontier history.

Ming Great Wall
Stretching across northern Shaanxi, the Ming Great Wall passes through Jingbian County, with more than 10 kilometers running alongside the road leading to Bolanggu Wave Valley.
Constructed during the Ming Dynasty as part of China’s northern defense system, this section of the Great Wall winds across deserts, grasslands, and rolling hills, providing spectacular scenery and historical significance.

Zhenbeitai Fortress
Another must-visit attraction is Zhenbeitai Fortress, one of the largest and best-preserved military fortresses along the Ming Great Wall.
Often called “The First Fortress of the Great Wall,” Zhenbeitai served as a vital watchtower and defensive stronghold guarding the strategic route into Shaanxi Province.
From the top of the fortress, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding desert, the Mu Us Sandland, grasslands, the Yellow River region, and the nearby Hongshixia (Red Stone Gorge).

Things to Do at Bolanggu Wave Valley
Visitors can enjoy a variety of unforgettable experiences, including:
* Explore the spectacular wave-shaped Danxia landforms
* Photograph colorful sandstone formations at sunrise and sunset
* Hike through unique geological landscapes
* Visit the historic Tongwancheng Ancient City
* Walk along sections of the Ming Great Wall
* Climb Zhenbeitai Fortress for panoramic views
* Experience the dramatic landscapes of northern Shaanxi
* Learn about the geological evolution of China’s Danxia landforms

Why Visit Bolanggu Wave Valley?
Bolanggu Wave Valley is one of China’s most visually striking geological destinations, combining spectacular red sandstone formations, unique Danxia landscapes, and rich frontier history.
Its close proximity to Tongwancheng Ancient City, the Ming Great Wall, and Zhenbeitai Fortress makes it an ideal destination for travelers interested in nature, photography, archaeology, and Chinese history.
Whether you’re searching for breathtaking landscapes, world-class photography opportunities, or an unforgettable off-the-beaten-path adventure, Bolanggu Wave Valley offers one of the most distinctive travel experiences in northwest China.
