The Hulunbuir Grasslands
Hulunbuir Grassland – China's Most Beautiful Prairie

Stretching across northeastern Inner Mongolia, the Hulunbuir Grassland is widely regarded as China's finest and most pristine grassland. Covering an immense area of rolling meadows, crystal-clear lakes, winding rivers, and untouched wilderness, it is often described as one of the most beautiful grassland landscapes in the world. For travelers seeking authentic Mongolian culture and spectacular natural scenery, Hulunbuir is an unforgettable destination.

The grassland takes its name from two magnificent lakes at its heart—Hulun Lake, one of China's largest freshwater lakes, and Buir Lake, which straddles the border between China and Mongolia. Together, these lakes nourish one of the richest grassland ecosystems on the vast Mongolian Plateau.

Unlike many steppes around the world, the Hulunbuir Grassland benefits from fertile soils, abundant rivers, and more than a thousand lakes scattered across the plateau. Endless green meadows stretch to the horizon beneath enormous blue skies, where herds of horses, cattle, sheep, and cashmere goats graze peacefully alongside traditional Mongolian yurts. This breathtaking scenery has become the classic image of Inner Mongolia and one of China's greatest natural treasures.

During the short summer season, the grassland bursts into life. Countless colorful wildflowers blanket the meadows, while the shimmering blue waters of Hulun Lake create a striking contrast against the endless green prairie. The combination of vast open landscapes, fresh air, and brilliant colors makes Hulunbuir one of China's premier destinations for photography and outdoor adventures.

The Hulunbuir Grassland is also one of the best places to experience the rich traditions of the Mongolian people. Visitors can stay in traditional yurts, dress in colorful Mongolian costumes, ride the famous Mongolian horses across the open steppe, or enjoy camel rides through the grasslands. Traditional horse-drawn carts provide another enjoyable way to explore the countryside, while boating and fishing on Hulun Lake offer peaceful opportunities to appreciate the region's natural beauty.

Food is an essential part of every Hulunbuir journey. Fresh lake fish, roasted whole lamb, hand-cut mutton, locally produced dairy products, and traditional Mongolian milk tea are among the region's signature specialties, allowing visitors to experience the authentic flavors of the grasslands.

Nature lovers will also discover an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. Hulunbuir serves as an important habitat for numerous migratory birds and wild animals, including the graceful Mongolian gazelle, which migrates from Mongolia and Siberia to the region during the harsh winter months. The area's rich wetlands, forests, rivers, and grasslands support one of northern China's most valuable ecosystems.

Beyond the grassland itself, visitors can explore nearby attractions such as Hulun Lake, Buir Lake, the vibrant border city of Manzhouli, the Ergun Wetlands, and the forests of the Greater Khingan Mountains (Greater Daxing'an Range). Together, these destinations create one of China's most rewarding nature and cultural travel experiences.

The best time to visit Hulunbuir Grassland is from June to September, when the weather is pleasantly cool, wildflowers are in full bloom, and traditional Mongolian festivals bring the grasslands to life with horse racing, wrestling, archery, music, and dance.

Often described as the last great unspoiled prairie of China, Hulunbuir has been recognized as one of the country's most extraordinary hidden travel destinations. Whether you dream of riding across endless grasslands, photographing spectacular sunsets, experiencing authentic nomadic culture, or simply escaping into nature, Hulunbuir Grassland offers one of the most unforgettable journeys in China.
