Hailar National Forest Park
Hailar National Forest Park – A Green Paradise of Forests, Grasslands and Wetlands

Located in the western suburb of Hailar District, the gateway city of Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia, Hailar National Forest Park is a remarkable natural destination combining ancient forests, vast grasslands, wetlands, wildlife, and historical heritage. Only about 2 kilometers from downtown Hailar, the park offers visitors an easily accessible escape into the beautiful landscapes of northern China.
Originally known as Hailaer Xishan Forest Park, it was officially designated a national forest park and is famous as China's only state-level forest park dominated by Mongolian Scotch pine forests. Covering approximately 147 square kilometers, the park is divided into four main areas: the Southern Area, Northern Area, Western Area, and the Reserved Resource Area, each offering unique natural and cultural experiences.

A Unique Mongolian Scotch Pine Forest
The most distinctive feature of Hailar National Forest Park is its magnificent Mongolian Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) forest. These hardy evergreen trees thrive in the harsh climate of the Hulunbuir region and create a spectacular landscape of towering pines, endless grasslands, and fresh northern air.

Walking through the forest feels like entering a natural sanctuary, where ancient trees, open meadows, and abundant wildlife create a peaceful environment far away from urban life. The combination of forest and grassland ecosystems is one of the unique characteristics of the Hulunbuir region.

Southern Area – Nature and History Combined
The Southern Area is not only known for beautiful scenery but also for its historical significance. During the Second World War, the region was connected with military activities involving Japanese forces. Historical remains, including defensive structures built during the turbulent years of the 20th century, can still be found in the area.
The southern section also contains archaeological discoveries from the Microlithic Age, revealing that humans lived and used this land thousands of years ago.
Today, the area has been developed with visitor facilities including the Hailar Exhibition Center, traditional restaurants featuring Mongolian cuisine, botanical gardens, a zoo, and several scenic viewpoints. Visitors can enjoy both cultural exploration and outdoor recreation.

Northern Area – Forest, Grassland and White Sand Landscapes
The Northern Area preserves one of the best-maintained natural evergreen forests and grassland ecosystems in the region. The vast forest landscape, combined with open grasslands and unusual areas of pure white sand, creates a fascinating environment that resembles a natural ecological museum.
The diverse habitats support many species of plants and animals, making this area ideal for nature observation, photography, and ecological study.

Western Area – A Birdwatcher's Paradise
The Western Area contains a vast wetland ecosystem covering approximately 2,500 square kilometers, including 15 lakes surrounded by rich vegetation. These wetlands provide important habitats for numerous rare bird species and have been recognized for their outstanding ecological value.
Visitors may observe migratory birds, waterfowl, and other wildlife while enjoying the peaceful scenery of lakes, forests, and grasslands. Nearby, the China-Japan Friendship Forest adds another cultural element to this beautiful natural area.

Reserved Resource Area – A Natural Research Sanctuary

The Reserved Resource Area is the largest section of the park, covering about 140 square kilometers. It serves as an important conservation and scientific research zone, including seed production areas, forest demonstration zones, shelter forests, desertification control areas, wetland protection zones, and ecological research facilities.
The area protects approximately 160 plant species and more than 60 bird species, preserving the biodiversity of the Hulunbuir ecosystem for future generations.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Hailar National Forest Park is from June to September, when the forests are green, the grasslands are lush, and the weather is comfortable for hiking and sightseeing. Autumn is also beautiful, as the forests take on golden colors and create spectacular scenery for photography.

A visit to Hailar National Forest Park provides an excellent introduction to the natural beauty of Hulunbuir. With its rare pine forests, peaceful wetlands, abundant wildlife, and fascinating history, it is an ideal destination for travelers seeking an authentic experience of Inner Mongolia's wilderness.
