Dalinur Lake

Dali Nur Lake – Inner Mongolia's Magnificent Swan Lake

Nestled amid the vast grasslands of Hexigten Banner (Keshiketeng Qi) in Inner Mongolia, Dali Nur Lake (also known as Dali Lake or Dalinur Lake) is one of northern China's most beautiful inland lakes and an important sanctuary for migratory birds. Its Mongolian name, "Dali Nur," means "a lake as vast as the sea," a fitting description of its breathtaking open waters surrounded by endless grasslands.

As the second-largest inland lake in Inner Mongolia, after Hulun Lake, Dali Nur is renowned as one of China's Three Great Swan Lakes, alongside Bayinbuluk Swan Lake in Xinjiang and Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province. Every year, thousands of swans, cranes, geese, and other migratory birds stop here during their seasonal journeys, making the lake one of the country's premier destinations for birdwatching and wildlife photography.

Recognizing its outstanding ecological value, the area was designated the Dali Nur National Nature Reserve in 1997. Covering approximately 1,200 square kilometers, the reserve protects a remarkably diverse landscape that includes lakes, wetlands, grasslands, sand dunes, forests, and volcanic landforms. These varied ecosystems provide an ideal habitat for numerous rare and endangered bird species as well as many native plants and animals.

Located on the southwestern edge of the spectacular Gongger Grassland, Dali Nur lies about 90 kilometers west of Jingpeng Town, 300 kilometers north of Chifeng, and approximately 680 kilometers north of Beijing, making it one of the highlights of Inner Mongolia's grassland and nature tours.

Unlike many freshwater lakes, Dali Nur is a closed inland brackish lake, meaning it has no outlet to the sea. The lake covers an area of approximately 240 square kilometers and has an average depth of 10 to 13 meters. Its mineral-rich waters, wide reed beds, and surrounding wetlands create an ideal environment for aquatic life and migrating waterfowl.

Throughout the year, Dali Nur offers visitors changing seasonal scenery. Spring and autumn are especially popular for observing thousands of migrating birds, while summer brings lush green grasslands, blooming wildflowers, and excellent opportunities for boating, photography, and outdoor recreation. In winter, the frozen lake and snow-covered steppe create a tranquil landscape unlike anywhere else in northern China.

A visit to Dali Nur Lake combines magnificent natural scenery, abundant wildlife, and authentic Mongolian grassland culture. Whether you are a birdwatcher, photographer, or nature enthusiast, this remarkable lake offers one of the finest eco-tourism experiences in Inner Mongolia and a memorable escape into China's vast northern wilderness.
