Luoyang Peony Flower Fair
The China Luoyang Peony Culture Festival is one of China’s most famous flower festivals and the city’s signature annual cultural event. Held each spring in Luoyang, Henan Province, the festival celebrates the blooming of the city’s legendary peonies, which have made Luoyang known as the “City of Peonies.”
With a history dating back more than 1,600 years to the Sui Dynasty (581–618), the festival combines magnificent floral displays with Chinese history, traditional culture, performances, exhibitions, and tourism activities. It has become one of China’s most popular spring festivals, attracting millions of visitors from around the world every year.

A Tradition of More Than 1,600 Years
Peony cultivation flourished in Luoyang during the Sui and Tang dynasties, when the flower became closely associated with prosperity, elegance, and nobility. Over the centuries, peony appreciation developed into an important local tradition that eventually evolved into today’s China Luoyang Peony Culture Festival.
In 2008, the Luoyang Peony Flower Fair was recognized as part of China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage, reflecting its important role in preserving traditional flower culture and local customs.
Today, the festival serves as a major cultural, tourism, and economic event while showcasing Luoyang’s rich historical heritage.

When Is the Festival Held?
The festival is typically held from late March to late April, with the peak blooming season occurring in early to mid-April, depending on weather conditions.
Different peony varieties bloom at different times, allowing visitors to enjoy colorful displays throughout the festival season.
Experience the Beauty of Luoyang’s Peonies
During the festival, parks and gardens across Luoyang burst into bloom with hundreds of thousands of peonies in a spectacular variety of colors, including pink, red, white, purple, yellow, and coral.
In addition to flower viewing, visitors can enjoy:
* Traditional Chinese cultural performances
* Tang Dynasty-themed activities
* Garden exhibitions
* Photography opportunities
* Local handicrafts and cultural displays
* Seasonal food and specialty products
* Evening light shows at selected parks
The festival offers an immersive experience that combines natural beauty with Chinese history and culture.

Best Places to See Peonies
Wangcheng Park
As the birthplace of the original Luoyang Peony Flower Fair, Wangcheng Park remains one of the city’s most popular flower-viewing destinations. The park features more than 150,000 peony plants representing over 800 varieties, alongside landscaped gardens, cultural performances, and family-friendly attractions.

Sui and Tang Dynasty City Ruins Botanical Garden
This modern botanical garden displays more than 300,000 peonies and combines magnificent flower gardens with historical landscapes inspired by the Sui and Tang dynasties. During the festival, visitors can enjoy themed performances, cultural exhibitions, and immersive historical experiences.

China National Flower Garden
The China National Flower Garden is China’s largest dedicated peony garden, featuring approximately 650,000 peony plants across a vast landscape. With carefully managed blooming periods extending from late March into early May, it offers one of the longest flower-viewing seasons in Luoyang.
Highlights include expansive peony fields, rare cultivars, and seasonal cultural performances inspired by famous historical figures such as Empress Wu Zetian and Song Dynasty scholar Ouyang Xiu.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit is early to mid-April, when most peony varieties are in full bloom and the city’s major gardens present their most spectacular displays.
Visitors planning to travel during weekends or public holidays are encouraged to arrive early, as the festival attracts large crowds during peak flowering season.

Why Visit the Luoyang Peony Culture Festival?
The China Luoyang Peony Culture Festival offers one of the finest spring flower experiences in Asia. Beyond its breathtaking floral displays, the festival showcases Luoyang’s remarkable history as one of China’s ancient capitals through traditional performances, cultural exhibitions, and historic gardens.
Conveniently located near famous attractions such as the Longmen Grottoes, White Horse Temple, and the Luoyang Museum, the festival can easily be combined with a broader cultural tour of central China.
Whether you are passionate about flowers, photography, Chinese history, or traditional culture, the Luoyang Peony Culture Festival is one of China’s most unforgettable spring travel experiences.
