Laojun Mountain-Jiguan Cave
Laojun Mountain-Jiguan Cave Tourism Area is situated in the hinterland of Funiu Mountain in Luanchuan County, southwest of Luoyang City, which is the “ancient capital of nine dynasties” in west Henan Province.Laojun Mountain was also called Jingshi Mountain in ancient China because Lao Zi, the founder of Taoist school of Eastern Zhou Dynasty, lived in seclusion here for cultivation. At an altitude of 2,217 m, it is the main peak of 800-li Funiu Mountain. 1.9 billion years ago, it was formed by collisional orogeny, which created the magnificent landscape of all the mountains in different poses with beautiful shape towering to the sky and full of majesty, and thematic image of “Chinese green heart, the world’s geological wonder”. Laojun Mountain integrates natural landscape and Taoism culture all in one. Landscape on the mountain top is densely dotted everywhere, providing a real feast for the eyes.
Professor Luo Zhewen, the leader of ancient architecture expert group of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage praised the mountain as “the most famous mountain under heaven and a holy place of Taoism with magnificent mountain scenery and perfect ecological environment”. Academician Zhao Xun, an evaluation expert of world geoparks, was marveled at its beauty and gave such comment as “Its granite peaks are unmatched!” Jiguan Cave is a natural limestone cave which is called “karst landform” in geology. According to experts, many landscapes in the cave were formed 800 million years ago. It is 5,600 m deep including 5 levels, with a drop of 138 m. It is divided into 8 scenic spots. The landscape layout in the cave is variable but orderly in density and produces interest naturally. Mu Qing, the former president of Xinhua News Agency, inscribed the words “No. 1 Cave in North China”. Professor Zhu Xuewen, the President of Committee on Speleology, Geological Society of China, offered an authoritative comment on it- “Splendid as No. 1 Karst Cave in North China; No. 1 Dragon Palace in China for its distinctive formation”.
