Shaolin Temple
Shaolin Temple Scenic Spot is situated on Mount Song of Dengfeng County in Henan Province. Mount Song, the “Central Great Mountain” among the Five Great Mountains, consists of Taishi Mountain (1,494 m in altitude) and Shaoshi Mountain (1,512 m in altitude) and others, and sits high in the Central Plain with towering mountains overlapping one after another. Located between Kaifeng and Luoyang which are two ancient capitals in China’s history, it is a place where lots of literary men have been nurtured since the ancient times. Emperors, princes, generals and ministers, literary men, eminent monks and chivalrous people in past dynasties left a lot of places of interest, such as Shaolin Temple built in Northern Wei Dynasty, Zhongyue Temple with a grand scale, Songyang Academy- one of the four academies in China and two “General Cypresses” in the yard, and the most ancient Songyue Pagoda, Taishi Mountain, Shaoshi Mountain, three Han Que gates, and ancient observatory, etc.
Pagoda Forest is the graveyard of the Shaolin Temple. Housing the tombs of eminent monks from different historical periods, it is the largest pagoda forest in China. The levels, or stories, on the pagodas must be odd numbers (from 1 to 7) and are based on the achievements of the Buddhist masters they were built for. The era the pagodas were built in affects the shape (round or square) and the number of sides (4 or 6).
The Shaolin Temple Wushu (Martial Arts) Training Center comes last. Its perfect scenery makes it an ideal place for practicing the Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu. Shaolin monks have been practicing Kung Fu for over 1,500 years. The system was invented by Dharma who taught the monks basic methods to improve their health and defend themselves. The Martial art performance shows the true Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu. For example, Tong Zi Gong, performed by teenagers, is a kind of martial art to train one's flexibility and strength.
