Tianti Mountain Grottoes
Tianti Mountain Grottoes, also known as Liangzhou Grottoes, commonly known as the Giant Buddha Temple, is located in Dingshan Village, Zhangye Town, about 50 kilometers south of Liangzhou District, Wuwei City. It was first built in Beiliang in the Sixteen Kingdoms of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, with a history of about 1600 years. Tianti mountain peaks towering, rugged roads, the difficult to climb, like a hanging ladder, so the name ladder mountain, perennial snow, for one of the eight views of ancient Liangzhou "ladder snow". Among them, the main statue of the 13th cave is about 28 meters high and 10 meters wide. Sitting on the mountain and water, right arm stretched, blue waves and thin clouds wrapped around its body, forming a spectacular scenery of mountains, water, Buddhas and clouds. It is a famous tourist resort in Liangzhou. Tianti Mountain Grottoes is an outstanding representative of the early grottoes art in China. Its excavation has a demonstration and enlightening effect for the grottoes in the surrounding or farther areas of the same period, forming the famous "Liangzhou Model" in the history of Buddhist grottoes art in China.

The Tianti Mountain Grottoes were founded in the Northern Liang Dynasty during the Sixteen States of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. It was dug by Ju Qu Mengxun from 412 to 439 AD. Since the Northern Cool, the Northern Dynasty to the Sui, Tang and Zhou dynasties, and the restoration from the Western Xia to the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

The prosperity of Buddhism was a major feature of the development of Liangzhou culture during the Wuliang Period. The excavation of this cave attracted the attention of the Buddhist circle, which made the eminent monks of the Western regions come one after another. They lectured on sutras in Liangzhou and translated Buddhist scriptures, which made the Tiantai Mountain Grottoes more famous. Tiantai Mountain Grottoes play an important role in the dissemination of Buddhism and the development of Buddhist art, and play an important role in the development history of Chinese grottoes and even the whole development history of Buddhism.

Tianti Mountain Grottoes is not only one of the earliest grottoes in China, but also a representative of the early grottoes art in China. It has far-reaching influence and has high historical status and artistic value. It is praised as "the source of the grottoes and the ancestor of the grottoes" by historians.

The Tianti Mountain Grottoes are the representative of the early grotto art in China. In the process of digging the Tiantai Mountain grottoes, a group of skilled craftsmen, sculptors and color painters who dug the grottoes were cultivated. After the completion of the Tiantai Mountain Grottoes, with the change of the political situation and the eastward movement of the center of the Buddhism, the lower Pingcheng (now Datong, Shanxi Province) began a new life and became an important technical force in Yungang Grottoes and Longmen Grottoes, while Tan Yao became the Buddhist leader of the Northern Wei Dynasty. In addition to Changping City, part of it moved west to Dunhuang and other places, which also promoted the prosperity of Dunhuang Buddhism, made Dunhuang become the Buddhist center of Hexi Buddhism after Liangzhou, and promoted the second peak in the development process of Hexi Grottoes culture ── The rapid development of Dunhuang grottoes culture. The artistic style of the Great Tang Buddha (Cave 130) in the Dunhuang Grottoes is similar to that of the Giant Buddha in Tiantai Mountain, indicating that the excavation of the Tiantai Mountain Grottoes and its artistic style and architectural style directly affect Dunhuang and Hexi Grottoes.

At present, the big Buddha grottoes we could saw were created in the Tang Dynasty, and the most valuable Beiliang grottoes in the grottoes belong to the national treasure grottoes in China. The large mural painted on the north and south walls of the Giant Buddha Cave, the whole mural with fresh brushwork, bright color and vivid image.
