Mingsha Mountain
Mingsha Mountaion in Gansu provinceLocated about 6 kilometers south of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, Mingsha Mountain (Singing Sand Dunes) is one of the most spectacular natural wonders along the ancient Silk Road. Famous for its golden sand dunes, mysterious “singing sand” phenomenon, and the beautiful Crescent Spring (Yueya Spring), Mingsha Mountain is one of the must-visit attractions in Dunhuang.
The vast desert landscape covers an area of approximately 40 square kilometers, with towering sand dunes reaching dozens of meters high. The combination of golden dunes, blue skies, and ancient Silk Road history creates a breathtaking scene that has fascinated travelers for centuries.

The Beauty of Mingsha Mountain Desert
The most impressive feature of Mingsha Mountain Dunhuang is its endless golden sand dunes stretching across the desert.
Visitors can explore this unique landscape in various ways:
* Camel riding across the desert
* Electric sightseeing vehicles
* Desert off-road vehicles
* Hiking on the sand dunes
Among these experiences, riding a camel is the most popular choice. Sitting on a camel and slowly crossing the golden desert allows travelers to experience the atmosphere of the ancient Silk Road caravans that once passed through this region.
Standing on top of the dunes, visitors can enjoy:
* Rolling waves of golden sand
* Clear blue desert skies
* Stunning sunset views
* The peaceful sounds of the desert
When walking down the dunes, visitors may hear a mysterious sound produced by the moving sand, giving Mingsha Mountain its famous name — the “Singing Sand Mountains.”

Crescent Spring: A Desert Miracle
At the foot of Mingsha Mountain lies Crescent Spring (Yueya Spring), one of Dunhuang’s most iconic landscapes.
The crescent-shaped lake has existed in the desert for thousands of years and is surrounded by golden sand dunes and green vegetation. The striking contrast between the blue water, green plants, and golden desert creates a poetic and unforgettable scene.
Crescent Spring is considered a natural wonder because the lake has survived in such an extremely dry desert environment without being buried by surrounding sand dunes.
Visitors can enjoy:
* Panoramic views from the sand dunes
* Photography of the desert oasis
* Sunset scenery over the lake
* Traditional desert activities

Desert Activities at Mingsha Mountain
Mingsha Mountain offers a wide range of exciting desert experiences.

Camel Riding
Camel trekking is the classic Dunhuang experience. Following ancient Silk Road routes across the dunes, visitors can imagine the journeys of merchants and explorers who traveled between China and the West.

Mingsha Mountain in Gansu provinceSand Sliding
Visitors can experience sand sledding down the steep dunes, an activity suitable for both adults and children.

Desert Adventure
Other activities include:
* Desert sightseeing vehicles
* Quad biking
* Archery
* Photography tours
These activities make Mingsha Mountain an ideal destination for travelers looking for both natural beauty and adventure.

The Mystery of the Singing Sand
One of the greatest mysteries of Mingsha Mountain is the phenomenon known as “singing sand.”
When wind moves across the dunes or people slide down the sand slopes, the sand can produce deep humming or vibrating sounds.
Scientists have studied this phenomenon for many years. Different theories have been proposed, including:
* The resonance effect caused by the movement of sand particles
* The special composition and structure of quartz sand
* The interaction between dry sand layers and wind
Although researchers continue to study the exact cause, the mysterious sound remains one of the most fascinating features of Mingsha Mountain.

Legend of the Singing Sand Dunes
According to local legend, Mingsha Mountain was once known as Qingshi Mountain (Bluestone Mountain), where many temples stood beside Crescent Spring.
During temple festivals, people gathered to celebrate with music, singing, and performances. One year, the loud celebrations disturbed the sleeping Yellow Dragon Prince, who became angry and used his magical power to move huge amounts of sand and bury the entire area.
It was said that the sounds coming from beneath the dunes were the voices of the buried people, beating drums and mourning their fate. This ancient story became the legend behind the mysterious singing sands.
Although the legend is a myth, it reflects the deep connection between local people and the desert landscape.
