Zhuokeji Tusiguan Village
Located in Ma’erkang County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, Zhuokeji Tusi Official Village is a remarkable historical site featuring traditional architecture and the cultural heritage of the ancient Tusi system in southwest China.
Ma’erkang County lies on a high plateau approximately 2,700 meters above sea level, where the clear mountain environment and unique ethnic traditions create a distinctive cultural landscape. The Zhuokeji Tusi Official Village was built between 1736 and 1795 during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) and served as the political and administrative center of the local Tusi rulers.
The Tusi system was an important governing method used by ancient Chinese dynasties to manage ethnic regions. Local leaders, known as Tusi, governed their own communities while maintaining relationships with the central government.
Ancient Fortress Architecture
The existing Zhuokeji Tusi Official Village consists of four main buildings. The front and side buildings each have four floors, while the rear building rises to six floors, forming a magnificent fortress-like complex.
The different floors served specific functions:
* Ground floor: Used for kitchens and daily necessities.
* Second floor: Served as accommodation for soldiers and storage areas.
* Third floor: The main residential area, where the Tusi ruler and family lived.
* Upper floors: Designed for defense purposes, including cannon openings, watchtowers, and defensive rooms.
Combining residential, administrative, and military functions, the architecture reflects the power and social structure of the Tusi period.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Zhuokeji Tusi Official Village was not only the residence of the Tusi ruler but also the government office and political center of the surrounding region. The well-preserved structure provides valuable insight into the history, architecture, and governance traditions of ethnic communities in western Sichuan.
