Wenshu Temple
Located at No. 15 Wenshu Yuan Street in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Wenshu Temple is the best-preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu and one of the city’s most important cultural landmarks. It is also the home of the Buddhist Association of Sichuan Province and Chengdu City.
With its long history, magnificent halls, valuable Buddhist relics, and tranquil gardens, Wenshu Temple offers visitors a peaceful retreat in the heart of Chengdu.
History of Wenshu Temple
Originally built during the Tang Dynasty (618–907), the temple was first known as Xinxiang Temple. Its current name is closely connected with a legendary Buddhist monk named Cidu during the Qing Dynasty.
In 1681, during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), the respected monk Cidu came to Xinxiang Temple. He built a simple hut between two trees and practiced ascetic Buddhism there for several years.
According to local legend, when Cidu was cremated after his death, the image of Wenshu (Manjusri Bodhisattva) appeared in the flames and remained visible for a long time. Because of this extraordinary event, people believed that Cidu was the reincarnation of Manjusri Bodhisattva. Since then, Xinxiang Temple was renamed Wenshu Temple.
Precious Cultural Relics
The cultural treasures preserved at Wenshu Temple are among its greatest attractions. Since the Tang and Song dynasties, the temple has collected more than 500 pieces of paintings and calligraphy works created by famous artists and scholars.
The Sutra-Preservation Pavilion houses numerous valuable artworks, including masterpieces by renowned Chinese painters and calligraphers such as:

* Zheng Banqiao
* Feng Zikai
Among the temple’s most precious relics is a fragment of the skull of Xuanzang, the famous Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk and translator who traveled to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures.
Another treasured artifact is a delicate jade Buddha statue brought from Myanmar to China in 1922 by the Buddhist monk Xing Lin, who traveled the entire journey on foot.
Buddhist Statues and Temple Architecture
Wenshu Temple preserves around 300 Buddha statues made from various materials, including:

* Bronze
* Stone
* Wood
* Jade
Many of these statues feature exquisite craftsmanship and colorful decoration, reflecting the artistic achievements of Chinese Buddhist culture.
Beyond its collections, the temple is also admired for its elegant gardens, solemn halls, and traditional architectural style, creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors.
Tea Culture at Wenshu Temple
One of the unique experiences at Wenshu Temple is enjoying tea in its traditional Tea House. Visitors and local residents can relax with a cup of Sichuan tea while listening to performances by folk musicians.
