Wangjianglou Park (Bamboo Park)
Located on the south bank of the Jinjiang River in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Wangjiang Tower Park is one of the city’s most famous cultural landmarks. Together with Wuhou Temple and Du Fu Thatched Cottage, it is regarded as one of the three major historical and cultural sites in Chengdu.
The park is dedicated to Xue Tao, one of the most celebrated female poets of the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Known for her intelligence, literary talent, and artistic achievements, Xue Tao holds a unique place in Chinese literary history.
The Story of Xue Tao
Xue Tao was born during a period of social unrest in the Tang Dynasty. Her father named her “Tao,” hoping she would overcome difficulties and achieve a meaningful life.
After her father passed away, Xue Tao experienced many hardships and eventually became a singer. However, her exceptional beauty, intelligence, and literary talent soon gained recognition. She became a highly respected poet and cultural figure of her time.
Historical records suggest that Xue Tao wrote around 500 poems, many of which were admired by contemporary scholars and poets. Her works reflected her observations of life, emotions, and the society around her.
Because of her remarkable achievements as a female poet in ancient China, Wangjiang Tower Park was built to commemorate her contribution to Chinese literature.
Bamboo Garden of Chengdu
One of the most attractive features of Wangjiang Tower Park is its magnificent bamboo landscape. Xue Tao was especially fond of bamboo, which symbolized qualities such as integrity, elegance, and resilience in traditional Chinese culture.
To honor her, the park has preserved more than 150 varieties of bamboo from China and overseas, making it one of the finest bamboo gardens in Chengdu.
Walking through the peaceful bamboo paths, visitors can enjoy the elegant scenery and experience the artistic atmosphere associated with ancient Chinese scholars and poets.
Wangjiang Tower
The iconic Wangjiang Tower is the landmark structure of the park. Standing 39 meters high, it is the tallest and most impressive building within the garden.
The tower is also known as Chongli Pavilion, meaning “grand and beautiful” in Chinese. The four-story structure features a unique architectural design:
* The lower two floors are square-shaped
* The upper two floors are octagonal
* Each roof level is decorated with delicate sculptures
According to legend, the tower was designed according to Feng Shui principles to enhance literary fortune. After its completion, the sponsor revealed through two poems that the true purpose of building the tower was to honor Xue Tao.
